Isn't the typical rhyme scheme for a sonnet abab cdcd efef gg?

For a Shakesperean sonnet, yes! But Patrarchan are the first, the most common, and my personal favorite so I chose that one instead. However, if you’d like to write a Shakespearean sonnet, go for it! Here is a source for different types of sonnet rhyme schemes for anyone who prefers another type or wants to shake things up:
