also I know (again) that I'm preaching to the choir about this because I had the initial conversation on clone tumblr back in the day but it never doesn't fuck me up that Rex went on one of the most harrowing missions of his life on Umbara and then got slingshotted onto the Zygeria mission where he got to experience another version of his personal hell on account of being next to Obi-Wan

#idk how far those two missions were apart but they couldn't have been *that* far considering they were back to back episodes #star dorks #temp clone tag #Rex was put through the wringer that month and for what #we did get the 'I'm no Jedi' moment from him though which is bar none one of the most iconic moments of the show

#also so much of the recent discourse I've seen both in terms of how the fandom thinks of clone fans + how they're viewed in larger canon #is making me feel a touch defensive about my being in the clone fandom even if it's largely dormant (thanks tbb)#but like. idk I feel like on one hand people are so stuck in the pre-tcw or traviss version of them that tcw-based clone fandom is looked #down upon even if tcw's been around for over 10 years at this point #or alternatively people think that because the clones all look the same that finding the individuality in them is sort of silly #be it either through meta or finding them hot #idk like I said. not been active in the fandom for a good while but it does make me feel off #and I'm not saying the clone fandom hasn't had its weird moments or issues bc god knows we've talked about that internally #but almost none of the outside discourse I've seen is about what clone fans actually critique each other for from the inside #idk tag rant over #star dorks #temp clone tag #sw negativity #okay I lied but seriously when people think the clones getting their characterization was a downgrade. blood boiling tbh.

rewatching umbara and here are some of the highlights I've learned upon watching episode 7:

…I just realized, the separatist blockade despite the republic's lightning strike means that umbara/the separatists figured even without a ton of intel that the republic would attack to reclaim umbara. nice. and by nice I mean "oh god that definitely telegraphs a side of the republic I'm sure we're going to learn more about in Andor".

I'd caught before that there's no soundtrack when they land on Umbara, and that this signifies the arc being different than what we've seen before, what I didn't catch, is that this happens right when we see the clones are fighting the Umbaran people and not battle droids.

While Anakin addresses Krell by "Master Krell", a Jedi's title, Krell addresses Anakin as "General Skywalker", which is uncommon among clone wars era Jedi. They had little breadcrumbs for his turn which was just.

I’ve gotta be honest, I thought I’d be sadder when Echo left the team to join Rex, but you could see he was just so despondent whenever he was on a mission, especially one which could be more “frivolous” that I’m happy he gets to go and do what he considers fulfilling.

It also doesn’t help that it feels like he never really got a voice in the team, never got to use his skills to help during a battle (anything he does can usually be done better by Tech and/or Hunter), and it overall felt like the showrunners were just waiting to write him out for this entire season and a half, barring the first two episodes of s2. I’m unsure if most viewers (or even the batch!) will miss him after he’s gone.

However, the goodbye scene with Omega felt very real and emotional—because she’s never known the crew without Echo, and has apparently been doing lessons with him and overall I was almost a blubbering mess during that one.

Honestly, as a fan of Echo and Omega, I’m kind of nonplussed that their growing relationship was only told during that scene instead of shown during any of the episodes in season 2, but ah well.

literally every time I rewatch the umbara arc though, I find another reason to fall in love with Hardcase again

#hc watches tcw #I know I don't talk about him as much anymore but I truly love watching him #and like. he's so complex! even more so than I realized when I was in my heyday of talking about him #and that's what makes him neat #his valor and dedication connect him to kix and his drive and initiative connect him to jesse #he's a mentor he's skilled he's callous he's selfish sometimes #and all of it gets wound up in a package that ultimately cares so much about others and has a zest for life #despite the literal purpose of his creation being death #anyway #star dorks #start dorks #temp clone tag
