Colors on medieval flags had meaning. For instance, green represented hope and blue meant loyalty and truth. Gold was generosity and silver/white peace and sincerity. Red represented strength, valor and the warrior spirit. Flags were used to identify status or association of the bearer. A colorful flag indicated nobility as peasants could not afford dye. Additionally, banners were used in wars to distinguish friends from foes.
