veiling for any length of time is a devotional act for they who is between, and it's also a social cue to others that if someone is veiled in public, please leave them to their thoughts. veils are worn during the grieving process or extended periods of spiritual work with one's own struggles or changes, or if they are in the midst of a devotional period to the shadow spirit, in which solitude and quiet contemplation is sought. it's also perfectly acceptable to veil if you're, say, having a rotten day and just need to grab some groceries or something and really don't have the energy for small talk or distractions, as being in a "funk" falls under they who is between's liminal realm, and the act itself of veiling can inspire further reflection on your bad mood to help understand what you're actually feeling and get yourself back into a better state of mind.
(i make little posts like this here and there but realize there's only maybe 2 or 3 of you who have a single clue what im talking about, here's context)
i gotta retro-engineer a piece of mahaji tradition to fit the aesthetic i have in mind....... so rho'ki is elevated to dova unexpectedly -- qersho is very old but was not ill when he died, in fact he was in the shrine office writing to another dova planning an upcoming forum -- and rho'ki came to work before sunrise as usual to find the other dovas waiting for them to begin the ritual of passing the spirit mantle of the shrine's dova on to rho'ki. it's not until they've left the temple for the day and go to feana's shop as he's closing up that feana knows what's happened, and he realizes before rho'ki can tell him because they're wearing the dova chatelaine. now, what's on this chatelaine? i haven't got a fuckin clue, but i love the idea of it, so i'll figure it the hell out later.
