#Bangkok No.13 // Wat Arun across the river At first, navigating Bangkok can be intimidating. Wat Arun for example is on the other side of the river with no close bridges and I was pretty paranoid about the Bangkok traffic situation. But Wat Arun is easy to get to. If you’re like me, you would be staying on the east side of the river, you can take the BTS to the ferry terminal, head on the ferry to the Grand Palace and then take the river crossing to other side. #Bangkok No.10 // Wat Arun Restored, Old vs New Wat Arun’s towers is finely decorated with colourful Chinese porcelain, but over the hundreds of years have collected dirt, dust and moss that the main pieces are black in colour. In fact, during my first visit in 2015, the temple was black from the distance. Today, the temple is now shinning glimmering in white, after a restoration effort in 2017. The downside of course, is that the steps are no longer accessible for a climb up. #Bangkok No.9 // View of Wat Arun Directly opposite Wat Arun is where the new capital of the Thonburi Kingdom and upon it, the Grand Palace was built. From Wat Arun’s higher levels, you can catch a glimpse of the palace over the river. #Bangkok No.8 // The climb up Wat Arun is built in the ancient Khmer architectural style, and has one of the highest towers in Thailand. The tower, called a “prang” is almost 80m tall and is something that any visitor won’t be able to miss. #Bangkok No.7 // Wat is that. A wat is what a temple is called. Buddhism is the main religion in Thailand and as such, the city is filled with countless of wats, dedicated to the religion. Of all the wats in Bangkok, this one is particularly special, and I would definitely make Wat Arun the first stop in your Bangkok temple run. Wat Arun is pretty old. In fact, it’s older than the founding of the capital of Bangkok. It’s location just on the riverbank dominates the skyline particularly at dawn as the sunrise loom majestically over the horizon.
