Chapter Two
————————————————————————
When Agatha gets to the book signing, the room is already crowded. People of every age and social group hang out in the dim light of the local library as the air is filled with the smell of old books and wooden shelves. Some of the guests are already seated in their chairs, some are pressed against the walls around the place, whispering in small groups, champagne glasses in one hand, Wanda`s book in the other. The air is filled with everybody’s excitement and the never-ending murmuring that fills the room helps Agatha to drown her nagging thoughts and fills her with a calmness she has never experienced before.Taking a deep breath, the brunette lets her free hand slide through her hair in one slow motion, before she finally steps towards the seating area, her crystal clear eyes scanning the place for a vacant seat. She finally finds one tucked away in a corner where the dim light won’t reach her face and she can take in every inch of Wanda’s features without her noticing.
Nodding to herself, she checks her surroundings once again and allows herself to fully take in the room’s energy. Next to her, there is a group of young girls, most of them seemingly younger than the author. They sit close to one another and stick their heads together, quietly discussing a scene, tapping their fingertips against highlighted pages. Behind her, an old man grabs the free hand of his wife and fondly smiles at her, as her other hand rests on red letters. Smiling to herself, Agatha falls back into her seat and rests for a minute. Her view to the stage doesn’t seem to be restricted in any way and so she finally takes a breath as her hand slides into her bag, searching for the letter.A few minutes strike by until her heart nearly stops as she gets ripped out of her thoughts when a young man comes to a halt right next to her.“Care if I sit there?“ He points to the seat that is currently occupied by her bag.“Hm?“, Agatha looks around, noticing the room has filled nearly to the brim, “oh, yeah, sure!“
A warm smiles appears on the man’s face as he slides past her, falls onto the now empty chair and makes himself comfortable. A minute later, he turns towards the brunette.
“Tell me.. What brings you here?“ His deep brown eyes scan Agatha’s features, excitement radiating all around him as he becomes one with the surroundings.
When Agatha does not answer right away, he takes the lead and answers for himself. “Her new book is my favorite. The story just keeps getting better every time she creates something new. Actually.. I’ve seen this young artist online who uses her stories and creates that comic for Scarlett. Have you seen it by any chance? It’s based on Ms. Maximoff’s facial features and let me tell you, it’s HOT. I mean she looks amazing both in there and in real life, but my favorite author as the Witch herself? Dope.“
He grins and watches as Agatha nods and a tiny line appears in between her eyebrows as she thinks about what she has just learned. After a few seconds, she gathers her thoughts and is just about to answer as he continues speaking. “I really just hope she notices me today. Maybe I get to take her home tonight - who knows?“
He winks and a smug grin appears on his face, sending a cold wave of disgust down Agatha’s back. I mean, let’s be honest. He isn’t wrong. Wanda IS hot. Very hot indeed and Agatha has spent quite some time thinking about that fact, but she would never talk about another woman like that. Not about Wanda. Not in public.
Before Agatha can say anything and voice her antipathy towards basically everything her seating neighbor just told her, the backdoor opens with a loud crack and a familiar figure appears in the light shining in from the outside. Everyone turns around to catch a glimpse and its absurd how much all of this feels like a wedding. For a moment, Agatha’s breath catches in her throat as she first lays eyes on Wanda. This is it. This is the moment. This might change her life.
Wanda continues walking along the rows and greets everyone with a warm smile, trying to make eye contact with as many of the fans as possible. In contrast to her neighbor, Agatha ducks back into the shadows, unwilling to raise Wanda’s awareness just yet. When she finally reaches the podium and takes a step into the stage lights, her hair looks like red flames for just a second and maybe the stranger is right. Maybe Wanda is the perfect witch herself. Her green eyes definitely work into the aesthetic and her smile is so mesmerizing it has to be magic.
Before Agatha gets to form another thought, Wanda has reached for the microphone end regards the crowd. She is different. Smaller. Quieter. Softer than Agatha imagined after everything she has read about the author. Upon closer inspection, Wanda pretty much is the opposite of the character she writes about. Just as if the witch was someone she wishes she could be.
“Good evening, everyone. Lovely to see you all tonight.“ She grins as she scans the crowd and her gaze lands on a small child in the front of the audience. “There are so many people here today. Wow. My management stocked up on seats so more of you fit in here and I honestly can’t believe so many of you actually came.“
She looks around once again. “Anyway, welcome to today’s reading. I hope you all brought your copy and are ready to jump right back into the story with me. Everyone who doesn’t - I hope you are ready to meet the new and improved Scarlett.“
A witty smile crosses her lips for just a second before she opens her book in one swift motion, sits down and starts to read without saying another word. For the next 90 minutes, Wanda takes her time to talk about her writing process, tell little stories about her life and read a couple pages at a time to make the readers ache for the upcoming publishing of her newest projects after reading the current book.
Whenever she looks into their direction, Agatha’s neighbor starts to breath a little heavier and she can’t help herself as she continuously rolls her eyes at his antics. He is clearly not the only one smitten by the author, but by far the most obnoxious and the brunette can’t believe how unlucky she was in her choice of placement within the crowd. Regardless, she is so mesmerized by Wanda’s personality that nothing else matters for most of the time and she doesn’t even notice when the reading is over and people start lining up to get their books signed and share a word with the author.
Due to that, Agatha is one of the last to get in line, but it’s not like she minds much, as it means she has more time to feel the other woman’s presence. Throughout the next, seemingly endless hour, she admires the library a little more, drinks another glass of wine and reads a couple more pages in her book as she tries to ignore the nagging feeling in her stomach that urges her to get to Wanda faster.
Luckily for her, the security guards urge the audience to move along rather quickly and ask everyone not spend endless time talking to the author as, like she stated right at the beginning of the reading, there were way more people in the audience than originally planned and Wanda has a long night ahead as there will be another reading in another city the next day.
The minutes take forever to go by and Agatha keeps herself busy by trying to catch close up glances of the red-head on the podium whenever she takes a step closer towards her, secretly hoping their eyes would meet. Interestingly enough, the closer she gets, the faster she can feel her heart rate going. Slightly embarrassed by that, she tries to calm herself down by stroking the edges of the letter in her pocket, manifesting her desired outcome.
When it’s finally time for her to take the final step onto the podium towards the author’s table, Wanda looks incredibly tired. She lets her hand run through her hair and greets the brunette with a soft smile. As she finally looks up, for a moment, time seemingly stands still.Blue meets green and, once again, Agatha’s breath hitches.
It’s time.

This place is doomed.... (Temporary AU)
The Foundation is incredibly underfunded and containment is difficult. A lot of funding was taken out of science and it’s hanging by a thread. It’s almost all in security and containment. If they’re funded equally, neither will be strong enough to combat invasion or containment breaches. If they fund Containment more, there will be almost no containment breaches but facilities will be weak against attack. If security is funded more, facilities will be safe from attack but will be more susceptible to containment breaches. The head council is releasing the budget soon.
The SCPs are waiting for an excuse to break out now. One breach could lead to a world wide containment breach. They say it’s going to happen any day now. Everyone’s preparing for war.
