temporary brief, art/artist research: beauty and the beast castle comparison (2/1/23)

while working on this project, I really wanted to have my research circle back to one media that I really enjoy; animation and 2d art. so for one aspect of my research, I want to take a look at one of my favorite animation films of all time, feature a castle similar to my project theme; beauty and the beast (1990)

the specific aspect I wanted to look at within the film for my project, was the difference in the castles design at the beginning of them film, in contrast to how its shown at the end of the film. I wanted to look at this as inspiration for my own work, in the sense of how a structure can look while in use, then again while it is mostly abandoned. the castle in the movie is different then the actual real life one I am focusing on, I think the theme similarities' would still be interesting to look at.

the first scenes I want to study are during the first half of the films run time, specifically these shots from the introduction (pic 1), later on in the film, when belle first arrives at the beast castle (pic 2) and the shot of her ascending the stairs to the castles west wing (pic 3

I chose these three first shots, due to the details and signs of wear and tear that can be seen within the castles both inside and outside. I can see this through the vines incapsulating the stain glass window in the first image, wrapping around both the old statues and the windows itself. I also like the second image, where we see a full shot of the castles exterior, and also what the front entrance of the castles looks like, surrounded by long dead trees and a old brick wall. the third image can also show signs of aging within the building itself as well, with the interior being made of brick and marble, painted in a dark and wore down fashion. the time that has passed since the castle has been in proper use can be very clearly seen within the environment of the story.

next to this, I also found three images from later on in the movie, specifically the ending scenes after the curse upon the castles and the inhabitants is broken, which I think showcase the contrast in look and atmosphere of the castle before and after. the scenes specifically from the curse breaking (pic 1), to the final ballroom scene (pic 2), and the ending (pic 3)

comparing these to the previous shots, big differences can be seen, with brighter colors in the stones in the exterior of the castle, the vines once wrapped around the window pain now being full of blossoming flowers, and the interior being shown with well lit and colorful pillars and floors of marble. I really like how these scene do the job as recasting the castle itself in a more alive revived, or even a more "living" sense compared to the rest of the movie's characterization.

these contrast I've found while looking back over this movie give me a few ideas for my own project, mainly to do with a few shots that I have taken of king johns castle during my primary research. i may try and recreate this "coming to life" feel that I can see through these shots in my own work.

first semester wall exhibition (16/12/2022)

some of the main pieces of my work that I have completed over the semester, where my project focuses on the temporary uses of kings johns castle, and the contrast I've found through my research;

including, a print I did to show contrast between man made structures and plant life

glaserine sheets where I drew outlines and images to represent each era of the castle's history I was looking at, before overlapping them to create one cohesive image

group of photos I took exploring dramatic lighting with a small 3d model of a castle that I created

a map with pinned routes showing the change in paths through out time, I made with the printed out images taken from the glaserine paper sheets

there are a few more uncompleted pieces I wish I had more time to maybe consider using, but over all I am happy with the work I've displayed thus far.

artiest research : Debbie smyths

one artist that I've been looking at this week is Irish textile and contemporary artist, Debbie Smyth. I have been looking into her work in creating 2d images using threads, strings and nails.

some pieces of hers that I have looked at for inspiration of my own work, is her piece " in full swing" (2013), which depicts people swinging through the use of her string and nails technique, and her pieces apart of the "maker in focus2 exhibition (august 2012) in the mission gallery.

I looked into this artist for research for my route/map piece, as I wanted to see how I could incorporated textiles into my project, while also showing the temporary nature of the roads and layouts of the city that we walk

Temporary brief progress :Layering map idea

After creating the outlines and layering them on top of one another with glaserine paper, I decided to try photocopying the images I had to create an even more layered look to the pieces. This turned out well in some places. I found that instead of putting all the sheets onto of each other at once (image 3 and 4), I found that printing one sheet, then reusing the all ready printed on paper to copy the other images on made it look better and more map-like. Two examples I have of this are of image 1, where I layered out the a3 sheets flat, and image 2, where I folded them in half.

I personally prefer the image in image one, as it gives more of a cleaner layered and map-like vibe to the piece.

temporary brief : progress (12/12/22)

after doing my drapery workshop, I wanted to experiment with outline drawings and putting layers onto of one another. so I got three layers of glaserine paper, then separated them by each era of time I was looking at for my study on the castle. I then collected images that I think displayed these eras and traced outlines onto the sheets, which through experimenting with which pens would work well on these sheets, I then added some color to the outlines with posca pens.

once I had each sheet complete, I then hung in up onto a wall and layer each sheet onto of one another, to create the look of one piece that showed all the eras together.

I really like how this piece turned out, but I do want to fill it up more with probably more images and other things that i find within my research, so I may come back this again and update it with more images/color

I have another idea for this piece that I want to integrate in with my exploration of routes and wire as well. so I look forward to seeing how that turns out.

temporary project : wire attempt one

after one tutorial, I started to experiment with wire and how it could be used to show routes taken through booth medieval and modern day limerick. one way I thought about showing this, was through a presentation like sheet, with facts and small drawings illustrated around the wire pieces.

the photo above was my first attempt, and after this I've decided to try a different approach to this ide rather than the one I initially wanted to do. I wasn't a fan of ho this tuned out, not liking the messy-ness and the craft look it had to it. I do want to keep the idea of both images and colors in my next attempt at this idea.

A peart of my project is creating these mood boards where I can collect the research and work I do by separating it by each era of the castle I've explored. I want to hopefully paint these before the break and add more written research as well

Temporary brief progress (5/12/22)

The most recent devolpment in my breif Is inspired by my drapery workshop. I enjoyed the feeling and look of working images onto glasrine paper, so I decided to do a collage of sorts using it

My idea is to get three sheets of paper, each representing a different era related to my research (eg: medieval times) , when the castle was used like a housing estate, and the tourism boom of recent times. I will then have images that I've researched drawn onto the paper and stylized, leaving an outline on the sheet

So far, I have a practice sheet done, where I went over what type of look I wanted for the finish drawings

I aalso experimented with colors, seeing if I could add some to the outlines to make the images look more intertsing. The best for this seemed to be posca pens, Whitch stuck the the paper without smudging
