Eluvium — Virga III (Temporary Residence)

Eluvium’s Matthew Cooper recorded the first two Virga installments in times of upheaval and isolation, the first when a freak snowstorm forced the artist and his wife to hole up in their garage instead of their home, the second during the onset of COVID. This third album in the series is less directly tied to outside stresses, though it does, obviously, emerge during a period when lots of people want to pull the covers up over their heads. In any case, these ambient concoctions of long-form loops are unusually — and perhaps necessarily — calming. If you’re looking for a reason to take a deep breath and chill, Virga III is as good as you’ll find.

It opens with the glacially paced “A.M.” a series of long, blowsy tones that overlap and interleave themselves, emerging as slowly as the first rays of light on the horizon, but gaining grandeur and density as the piece develops. There are a few, very few, spoken words interspersed, but mostly this track is about tones, some bright and trumpet like, others shifting and reedy. There’s not so much a melody as a sense of tidal movement.

“Hallucination II” is even more event-less, an airy hiss topped by slowly evolving synth washes. It’s the kind of thing that, if you consider it long enough, you may start to sense patterns, complexities, emotional resonances, though whether they are there in the music itself or in you is an open question. Think of it as the musical equivalent of a Mark Rothko painting, at first glance an undifferentiated block of color, but on further inspection, full of subtle variations.

The title track is the disc’s most emphatic, the one that comes closest to a structured melody, with its church organ blasts of meditative sound. It’s rising motif is sheathed in breathy distortions. You hear the melody as if it’s shrouded in wind and mist, and it is all the more beautiful for the indefinite haze that clings to it.  

This is not music for half-listening. You have to immerse yourself to make any sense of it. And yet, if you do, it will transport you to other, calmer places, imaginary environments that keep all that threatens at bay.

Temporary residency program for Palestinians fleeing Gaza starts taking applications | CBC News

The federal government has officially launched its special immigration measures program for extended family members of Palestinian Canadians

The federal government has officially launched its special immigration measures program for extended family members of Palestinian Canadians trying to escape the war in Gaza, allowing 1,000 of them to move here on a temporary basis. The program's website went live Tuesday afternoon. It says applicants are required to have up-to-date passports and results of biometric tests, such as fingerprints and photos for facial recognition. They must also show they will be supported by a Canadian citizen or permanent resident for a year. Successful applicants will receive temporary visas good for three years. The government has capped the number of successful applicants at 1,000, citing the volatile situation on the ground in Gaza and the obstacles it has faced in getting people out.
