Our Rental in OB
In my first post I mentioned that we had to move out of our house to do this renovation. We definitely could not have lived through this with us renovating pretty much the entire house down to studs, not to mention we are both working from home now! So to save our sanity and our marriage we decided to get a rental. We found a great place in OB (Ocean Beach area of San Diego if you didn’t know). We are now 3.5 blocks from the beach and the sunsets are amazing!
The place is small (2-bed and 1 bath detached bungalow), but it’s just what we need for the next few months. The landlord recently renovated the place right before we moved in, so we got to move into a pretty much brand new place! Here’s some photos of it.
There are 3 units on this property and we are in the front one. They are still finishing the front yard.
There is a cool little BBQ / picnic area just outside our front door.
Luckily we have our own little yard with a deck. The dogs love sitting out here in the sun!
Here’s the kitchen
Bathroom (ok this photo was taken a couple months before we actually moved in, the shower is complete now but you get the idea)
Our bedroom / my office
For the most part the rental is great. There are some electrical issues (:faceplam:), but the biggest issue was that our kitchen sink wouldn’t drain when we moved in. I had to hear lots of #rantsbybrett about it, and we could tell immeadiately why it wasn’t draining when we opened the cabinet below the sink. Uhhhh...
3 problems are glaringly apparent:
1. Sink drains aren’t supposed to be accordion type - this is a total violation of the plumbing code (for some stupid reason Home Depot sells this $7 accordion p-trap and DIYers buy it because it’s really easy to install - that’s great but it’s not code compliant or functioning!) not to mention the thing is kinked at an awkward angle
2. The metal pipe going from the p-trap to the wall slopes up! Water doesn’t flow up hill people!
3. It was leaking (hence the plate)
After a week of living here with no functioning kitchen sink (and lots of take-out), finally the landlord sent a professional plumber to fix it. When he arrived and looked under there his first reaction was to laugh... I mean it is pretty comical that someone would ever install this travesty of a pipe - on a kitchen sink no less! He had the thing fixed in about an hour and we now have a working kitchen sink! This is great because we like to cook and with no dishwasher the sink is pretty necessary.
It took us a few weeks, but we are finally all unpacked and organized. I even decorated a little bit for the holidays! It feels like home now.
Thanks for sending the wreath Mom!
We’ve been enjoying taking walks with the dogs through our new neighborhood. We miss our garage (street parking sucks), and I miss our dishwasher... but I found these sweet rubber gloves my Mom gave me a few years ago under the sink at our renovation house when we were moving out. I have to say that hand washing with a good set of reusable gloves is fairly life changing! I might actually enjoy doing dishes now... ok that was a lie, but it is better. Big ups to my Mom for the random gifts that come in pretty handy (wreath included)!

A numbers game
Making it through things in the military life is all a numbers game.
I can’t do a countdown of days left on this deployment until the number is well below 100, because that’s just too huge of a countdown and I’d probably be discouraged.
I am Noelle (aka Omelle!) and I am optimistic.
Instead, I think like this:
I am almost through with my second month here across the pond, which means I’m nearly…
