*    @temultuous​​    —    YOU  ARE  SO  MUCH  STRONGER  AND  BRAVER  THAN  YOU  THINK    (   IMOGEN  &  ORYM   ) 

THE   SMILE   FOR   IMOGEN   IS   SOFT.         he   averts   his   eyes,   touched   by   her   praise.      but,   of   course,   accepting   said   praise   without   deflecting   it   is   another   matter.            “      what,   with   these   little   arms?      ”            he   asks,   shrugging   with   his   smile   still   fixed   to   his   lips.      he   chuckles   a   little,   quietly   to   himself,   before   continuing:            “      thank   you,   imogen.      you,   too,   you   know   that?      right   back   at   you.      ”   

orym   isn’t   sure   if   it’s   bravery,   just   protecting   the   people   you   love      —      if   doing   the   right   thing   is   brave.      but   he   appreciates   her   saying   so   all   the   same.      he   does   know,   however,   that   imogen   is   brave.      she   confides   about   her   troubles,   but   she   faces   them   regardless   when   she   must.      that   is   real   bravery   right   there.

IMOGEN   DOES   NOT   KNOW   MUCH   OF   HIS   UPBRINGING.         none   of   his   friends   do      —      not   even   orym   and   fearne,   dariax   and   opal,   not   fyra’rai.      no   one.      dorian   keeps   those   memories   close   to   his   chest.      but   there   are   bits   and   pieces   that   slip   out      —      that   he   doesn’t   mind   giving   up   so   very   much.   

“      well   .   .   .      that   makes   two   of   us   then.      ”            he   offers   her   a   smile,   and   he   refills   her   glass.            “      part   of   it,   i   suppose,   is   that   i’ve   always   wanted   to   travel      —      to   be   everywhere   but   where   i   was,   you   know?      ”            he   chuckles   quietly.      some   memories   of   childhood   are   not   so   bad   picked   apart.            “      but   i      —      i   never   really   fit   in   at   home   either.      ”

𝐓𝐎 𝐁𝐄 𝐅𝐀𝐈𝐑, 𝐍𝐎 𝐎𝐍𝐄 𝐒𝐇𝐎𝐔𝐋𝐃 𝐇𝐀𝐕𝐄 𝐋𝐄𝐅𝐓 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐖𝐈𝐙𝐀𝐑𝐃 𝐎𝐍 𝐇𝐄𝐑 𝐎𝐖𝐍.     adaine  is  an  exceptionally  capable  young  woman ,  so  has  said  everyone  except  her  own  parents  --  but  she  has  her  limits ,  most  notably  spell  slots  and  the  number  of  hits  she  can  take .     the  last  thing  she’d  anticipated  was  another  blast  of  magic  from  behind  her ,  taking  out  the  threat  without  introduction  --  adaine  spins  ( spins  too  fast ,  injuries  stinging  and  head  swimming )  ,  taking  stock  of  the  person  who  has  quite  honestly  saved  her  life .          “ i  --  thank  you , ”          she  says ,  awkward ,  stilted ,  before  knees  won’t  support  her  and  she  rather  unceremoniously  sits  on  the  ground .

*    @temultuous​​    —    DREAMING  IT  ONLY  HAPPENED  IN  MY  HEAD   [  IMOGEN  &  DORIAN  ] 

TURNING   HIS   HEAD,   DORIAN   SNIFFLES   SILENTLY.         he   and   imogen   drink   alone   now,   the   rest   having   gone   to   their   rooms   or   fallen   asleep   where   they   rest   their   heads.      alone,   the   two   of   them   seemingly   weighed   upon   the   most   by   the   loss   of   their   friend      —      for   different   reasons,   for   the   same   cause.            “      if   only   it   had.      ”            he   shrugs,   choked   as   he   speaks.      he   barely   knows   bertrand   bell   when   they   part,   but   it   is   enough   to   carry   the   guilt   of   his   loss      —      the   loss   that   could   have   been   prevented   had   dorian   done   as   he   could,   as   he   should.            “      i   wish   .   .   .      well.      it   doesn’t   matter   what   i   wish   or   what   i   dream,   i   suppose.      ”            and   when   dorian   thinks   of   his   own   dreams,   he   does   not   wish   to   dwell   there      —      in   his   thoughts   or   his   dreams,   and   now   in   his   choices.            “      i   do   not   claim   to   know   his   mind,   but   .   .   .      from   what   i   know   of   him,   i   don’t   believe   bertrand   would   wish   for   us   to   dwell   like   this      —      not   on   what   we   cannot   change.      ”            easier   said   than   done.

aeryn is normally in tune with weather and nature effects, something about being a druid - though her mother would say it was because she was air-headed. a shake of her long blonde curls as she reaches down and picks a blade of grass from the edge of the lake.

imogen’s sitting idly by, staring into the waters. they’ve come for a bit of respite after being in a town for too long - neither one of them doing well in a large crowd. imogen for her capabilities, aeryn for the fact that she’s more beast than human at times, however pleasant she may be.

glancing over, though, there is a rippling to the waters. an unforseen force is causing commotion, and she can hear a sound on the wind that signals danger. a fog is steadily rolling in, suddenly, and not by her own doing, but it gives to a bad omen.

“imogen,” 

aeryn says, softly, reaching out to grab the fingers of her friend, shaking slightly in the midst of what was happening. she stumbled backwards, nearly collapsing as the blanket of haze began to reach them, and forth out of the waters burst some....creature.

she did not have time to speak, for the sound of a fearful cry caught dead in her throat as she was grasping harder onto her friend’s hand and pulling her through thickets of trees, nearly bumping into branches and other sorts, twigs cracking beneath their heavy footfalls. 

this was not a naturally occurring phenomena, that’s for certain, but she certainly did not want to stick around and find out what was going on.

the pair has retired again to the safety of zhudanna’s humble set up. she murmurs to herself, knitting in her chair until inevitably falling asleep. in the candlelight that flickers and wanes, imogen and laudna sit. there’s much on imogen’s mind, laudna wouldn’t need to be particularly perceptive to take heed of that. since bertrand’s death, since the nightmares, since this whole quest, she’s seemed to fall further into herself. laudna’s only fear, and she isn’t one to boast much in the way of fear, was imogen slipping beyond where she could be reached. perhaps it’s laudna’s staring that prompts her companion, but regardless the hollow one smiles. 

           “i could say the same. i’d made peace with being ... removed from others, if you will.” their stares, their whispers, the rumors. and then there was imogen. so wholly unlike the rest. “just me and pâté,” she pats the rat strung up at her side, pausing for only a moment should he like to interject. he doesn’t. 

“as splendid company as he is, rude as he can be, but then you came along and now i wouldn’t have it any other way.” and she means it. smile in tow, pulling higher at the left side of her mouth, she uses her finger to stir her boiling cup of tea. black drips in with the liquid, but it isn’t as if she minds it. “hard or not, imogen, it isn’t something you’ll have to face again — being alone. i’m not going anywhere you aren’t going as well. even if this little adventure we have with our new friends goes south, i’ll remain.” 

with a graceful lift of the chipped cup, she toasts to their friendship and sips in delight.
