chapter 10: confession

Archie’s gut twists along with the familiar turns toward his neighborhood from the heart of town, but it’s the image of the front door to the Cooper house hanging open that rends his nausea almost to the point of retching. Betty’s station wagon and Jug’s truck sit in the driveway, reminding Archie to scan the street for other cars. There are three parked, and one new one since this morning, down three houses. It’s too far to see the license plate.

“Jesus,” Pea mutters, real fear coloring his voice. All signs point to forced entrance. A radio from Munroe bleeps, reminding them of their directive— “Get inside first, backup is on the way.”

Sweet Pea pushes towards the front door in a rush and Archie realizes he doesn’t have time to screw his head on, they just need to move. Archie surges through the red door, which gapes open like the jaws of a monster ready to devour them all.
