There is no release date yet, but I was pretty proud of this first design. Cryptic lettering 'TENDERLOIN' for the back with small chest place TL cigil for the front. 'GARLAND SIMPSON' Micron 08 Pen on Bristol Paper 19x24in. 2021 $400 Pictured here is Garland Simpson at his 69th birthday party on 10/23 at the now legendary Look Gallery. Garland moved to SF from Michigan in 1978 at the age of 26. This was 43 years ago, the exact age I've been alive. Kinda puts things in perspective.... A few days ago he moved back to Michigan after recently purchasing a house. 'ALICE FINNAY II' Micron 08 Pen on Bristol Paper 19x24in $450 Unframed Alice (@bebe7l) will be the last artist I feature for Look Gallery which will officially closing tomorrow, Oct 30th. Look has displayed and sold her jewlery for years. Alice is an artist of multiple media which includes sculpture, jewlery, drawing, vaious mixed media and even repairing pigeons. She actually finds injured pigeons here in SF, repaires their injuries and nurses them back to health! Originally from various parts of Missouri, Alice moved to SF after spending 7 years in San Diego. She recieved her MFA in sculpture from SFAI in 1992. Her sculptures are enourmous in size, which caused her to rethink her approach dye to living in an SF studio apt. located on the TL. Pictured here are some of her leather pueces that she began in 1997 as a way of reconciling her Missouri roots while feeling out of place during her early years in SF. She took traditional leather tooling patterns and changed them to fit her own means of expression. Her meticulious paper drawings exist in both large and smaller sizes, some of which took up to 6 months to create. At some pint she had turbed to coporate America to earn a living while pursuing her art. Many of the materials used in her paper work are stolen media from her corporate jobs which she took as a way of reconciling her involvement in the corporate lifestyle. This was a way for her to have corporate Anerica nurture her soul and creativilty in some way. She sees her jewlery work as an extension of her prefered media of large scale sculpture. These works are currently available at Look. She works with sterling silver with 14 carat gold filler, 22 carrot gold vermeil and utilizes precious and semi precious stones in her work. She began showing them at look circa 2012. 'HILARY MAGAN' Micron 08 Pen on Bristol Paper 2021 $400 Unframed There's only a few days left until Look Gallery closes it's doors on Oct 30th. So here is Hilary, another member of the Look family. Hilary moved to SF nearly 25 years ago from San Diego and West Virginia before that. She began hanging out at look on theor opening night rexeption in 2011 after Scientologist neighbor convinced her to attend. She's been hanging out and volunteering ever since. Everyone that hangs out at Look has an really interesting story, and Hilary is no exception to that rule. She's currently earning here Masters in Industrial Hygene while working in Health and Safety for the SFMTA. Prior to that she worked for Homeland Security as an Anylitical Chemist for Customs and Border Protection. Some careers are simply more interesting then others! 'ADAM GUZZO' Micron 08 Pen on Bristol Paper 19x24in 2021 NFS Adam Guzzo 1971-2015 Adam is one of the artists still prominently featured at Look Gallery (720 Geary st.). It's been six years since his passing, but I still see his work displayed neary everyday. He was the first one to turn me onto Look years ago when he was using it as his night time oil painting studio. I first met him at Angel Cafe during a time in which I was consistently doing illegal street art throughout the city. He casualally approached me asking "Are you a part of the San Francisco Art scene". His specific demeanor made me think he was an undercover cop. I soon learned that was not the case, and many drunken art filled nights throughout the city followed. Stylistically we were near opposites in our approach to art, but we could talk shop for hpurs; often until the sun came up over countless bottles of wine soon followed by coffee. I do miss you Adam, but in many ways it really seems like you never left. Maybe it's still seeing you art all the time, frequenting the same places we did back in those days combined with the familiar scenery and mutual friends of the the TL; I'm not really sure what it is. Time just sorta stopped in those days and even though years have passed, somethings just never really changed. "Born on August 27, 1971 in Chicago, Illinois, Adam attended The Art Institute of Chicago before moving to The City in 1999, enrolling at the Academy of Art to study computer animation through 2005. Switching to oils as his primary focus, he began showing his work in 2011, finding favor with numerous local and national collectors. 'ANTONI MANCERA' Micron 03/08 Pen on Bristol Paper 19x24in 2021 $450 Antonio Mancera aka Toni is one of the featured artists displaying artwork at Look Gallery at 720 Geary st (@Leavenworth). Look Gallery has seved as both an art gallery/antique shop as well as a local community spot for TL locals for the last 10 years. They will be closing their doors permanently on October 30th 2021. I'm taking this month to feature some of the people and artists I've had the pleasure of meeting there over the years through drawing their portraits and sharing aspects of their lives Toni was born in El Paso, TX on Jan. 22, 1947. After his father's passing at Toni's six years of age, his mother remarried and the family relocated to Los Angeles, CA where Toni was raised. Recognizing his Mexican heritage, Toni had decided to keep his birth name of Mancera. After a tour of duty as an army corpsman in the Vietman War, Toni moved to San Francisco, CA in 1970. His experiences durimg the war layed a groundwork of inspiration for his future paintings. He soon starting attending workshops at The Tenderloin's Hospitality House where he soon became an art instructor. After recognizing his talent he enrolled in the San Francisco Art Institute in 1972 on a Third World Cultural Grant offered to him by the Institute. Starting off in a more 'realistic, picture like' approach to his painting, Toni soon discovered a 'post modern deconstructive' approach to his work after an instuctor at the Institite asked him to sketch a chair that was broken into pieces. "I can make things go in and out both playfully and seriously" proclaims Toni. Since then he has gained inspiration from Impressionism, Japanese motifs, abstraction and spiritual themes. His playful and deconstructive style is prevelent thrpugh the different mamifestions of his work over the last five decades. Anyone wishing to see his work can do so this month at Look Gallery on 720 Geary st.
