A MYSTERY: #781800
The running fan theory is that Sans was working with Gaster on time travel. He has locked away (that you can access) a hidden lab with a mysterious machine. He understands that you can go back in time, even if he doesn't remember what happened in past saves like Flowey does. When confronting his lost soul in the True ending, he mentions giving up, not being able to go back, and people being lost to him forever. It paints a picture.
