in honor of tenten week 2026 coming up, here’s an unfinished draft from last year’s tenten week that i just found in my folder, with the prompt “blossom.” i wish i could remember where i was going with this 😭
“Welcome to Yamanaka Flo–oh, you again!” Ino’s tone went from polite to teasing as Tenten walked into the flower shop, inching in with hesitance. Ino’s sharp blue eyes fell on the object cradled in Tenten’s hands. “Wah! What happened?”
Tenten’s smile was sheepish. She held the potted plant out to Ino, the few remaining leaves hanging sadly from the weak and twisted stem. “I was hoping you could tell me.”
“I just gave this to you a week ago, Ten,” Ino admonished, taking the pot from her friend’s hands, “how did it deteriorate so quickly?”
Tenten’s shoulders slumped, bottom lip jutting out into a pout. “You know I’m no good at taking care of stuff. No more plants for me.”
“You can’t just give up! Aren’t you and your squad all about the springtime of youth and embracing a hot-blooded challenge?”
Tenten directed her pitiful gaze toward a large bouquet arranged in a vase and set on the floor beside the counter. She squinted, trying to make out the writing on the small card attached to the arrangement, all while fighting an internal battle with herself about whether she would truly share her feelings with Ino.
She promptly decided against it, slipping on her typical mask of laidback cheer. “It’s fine, Ino. I never had much of a green thumb.”
“But–”
Tenten shook her head and turned away, walking toward the door. She turned, calling to Ino over her shoulder, “sorry for killing your plant!”
Ino watched her go with a frown, then turned her attention to the plant in question. It wasn’t dead at all–Ino gave it a quick inspection and diagnosed it as thirsty. All it needed was some distilled water. It was a dramatic type of plant, one whose leaves shifted depending on if it was dry or not getting enough sunlight. She was certain she told Tenten all of this, but Tenten was always so quick to give up, returning a plant only days after receiving it.
Ino bent behind the counter and got the watering can labelled with distilled water. She carried the pot over to the sink and poured some water in the dirt, sitting it in the sink to let it drain. While she was already working on a plant, she decided to go through and check the dirt of all the plants out front, then she would repot a few and take cuttings from others.
As she worked, Tenten’s words about not being able to take care of things reverberated in her mind. There was some realization that was just on the edge of dawning on her, but Ino couldn’t quite close the gap into full understanding. In the puzzle of Tenten that formed in her thoughts, there was a clear piece missing, but she couldn’t figure out what.
Her eyes found Tenten’s dry plant again, and her mind worked even faster than her fingers did, caked in dirt as they were.
**
Six months. Six months since the war ended. Six months since the Allied Shinobi Forces licked their wounds, counted their dead, and headed back to their respective homes across the five great nations.
Six months since Tsunade decided she would retire. Six months since she informed the elders of her plans, who then informed the daimyo, who–in a show of goodwill and a desire for continued peace–informed the daimyo of the other lands, who passed the information along to the leaders of their shinobi villages. Six months since her successor was picked out.
Six months, and Tsunade still sat in the chair. Six months of keeping it hush as preparations were made for the seat of power to be transferred. Six months and her successor has showed no sign of accepting the offer, continuing to take missions, train with his former team, and hang out around the village with Guy.
“Have you finished your work, Tsunade-sama?” Shizune piped up from Tsunade’s left, seated at her own little desk. Tsunade clenched her fist, glaring down at the small stack of papers that sat, untouched, in front of her.
“Damn that Kakashi,” she mumbled under her breath. With a sigh, she leaned back in her chair, stretching her legs. “I should be retired, on vacation somewhere, not cooped up with this damn paperwork. Always paperwork! All the villages are dealing with recovery efforts, why do I need to sign shit?”
She was this close to knocking the whole stack of papers over, but a knock at her door redirected her attention. “Come in!”
Tenten opened the door, bowing before entering the office. “Good afternoon, Tsunade-sama!”
