Trust August Day 12: Admitting you were wrong

Fandom: Final Fantasy XI

Characters: Tenzen, Player Character

Spoilers: Ending of Chains of Promathia

Summary: Tenzen apologizes for trying to kill the Player Character back on the hijacked Jeunoan airship. The Player Character has some things to say about it. Based on what I wanted to say during this cutscene.

Tenzen knelt before the adventurer, lowering his head in the utmost display of conscience. "Please, kill me." His breath left his mouth unsteadily. Were it not for his colossal failure, he would have desired to live out the rest of his life peacefully. Tears welled up in his eyes, and he blinked them down. "I betrayed your trust in pursuit of what I believed would save Altana's children. By hindering you, I have risked placing the Apocalypse on an unassailable course towards its goal." His heart beat fast. His tears dripped fast.

"I have dishonored my blade. I beseech you, kill me swiftly."

The adventurer tapped Tenzen's shoulder, and he looked up.

A hand was held out, and another teary face reflected back in Tenzen's eyes.

"You fought with honor. I cannot."

"B-but, my honorable friend, I have made an attempt on your life!" Tenzen cried, hanging his head in shame again. Salty water fell to the spongy blue soil beneath him.

"It is not that I cannot, Sir Tenzen, but that I have already forgiven you. I am, as you know, rather averse to bloodshed where it is not needed. You are a valiant warrior. It would do Van'adiel a great disservice to have you leave her ranks so swiftly. Besides, we are not gods, Tenzen. Making mistakes is our lot. So is admitting when we are at fault. Now, does your culture allow for any alternatives with which to apologize without putting yourself to death?" The hand reached out again, pulling Tenzen upright. The other clapped him on the back.

"I will swear a life debt to you, as my savior."

"Then I will rely upon your strength in my hour of need."

They looked up and out, looking through their watery eyes at the green hills, purple ocean, and mossy white castle that towered in the distance. It was beautiful, ethereally so. But more importantly, the air around it was crisp and fresh, clouding before them.
