Had an enjoyable evening at Nam Hwa Opera (NHOL)’s 56th anniversary dinner. We celebrated a number of milestones, including the opening of the Yeo Khee Lin Teochew Culture Research Centre (杨启霖潮州文化研究中心) and signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with National University of Singapore for students and faculty members to conduct research at the Centre – a partnership to encourage more people to learn about Teochew culture and heritage. Since it was established, NHOL has been dedicated to promoting and developing Teochew opera and music in Singapore. I’m happy to see that NHOL is engaging young audiences by conducting workshops for children and youths, and taking the initiative to explore innovative ways of presenting Teochew opera performances. These efforts are key to ensuring that such art forms, as an important part of our intangible cultural heritage, are safeguarded and passed down to future generations. My heartiest congratulations  once again to NHOL! Wow - I think it’s really great to know that traditional art can be preserved with the interest of young people. More people should take an interest in where they’ve come from (or where their ancestors have originated). Our origins help shape our overall identity (in my humble opinion) and that’s worth keeping in our lives. That’s my two cents.

Happy to celebrate Nam Hwa Opera’s (NHOL) 55th anniversary with friends and members of the Teochew community at its annual gala dinner. It was great seeing youths and even some little ones who gave a wonderful performance during the event! I was also glad to be part of the launch of ‘Imprints in Time’, a bilingual publication that closely examines the rich history of Teochew opera in a local context. Since it was established, NHOL has been dedicated to developing and promoting Teochew opera and music in Singapore. The traditional arts are an important part of our intangible cultural heritage, and efforts to engage the younger generation by groups like NHOL are key to ensuring that these art forms are safeguarded and passed down to future generations. Congratulations once again to NHOL on your 55th anniversary! Congratulations to Nam Hwa Opera (南华儒剧) on their 54th anniversary, and to Nam Hwa Opera Limited (南华儒剧社有限公司) on their 3rd anniversary! At their joint anniversaries celebration, I was happy to see many young performers onstage. At the event, Nam Hwa also launched their new Teochew Music Ensemble, a group comprising young and senior musicians. Many traditional arts groups like Nam Hwa are trying to engage our youths – this is an encouraging sign. We need to ensure that this integral part of our heritage and culture is passed down to future generations. 在1963年，一群潮剧爱好者为了过戏瘾，共创南华儒剧社。在2015年成功转型成为南华儒剧社有限公司后，南华的蓬勃发展有目共睹。 希望南华及各艺术团体能再接再厉，让不同年龄和族群的朋友感受到新加坡传统文化艺术的魅力。政府也会继续与各艺术团体携手合作，保存并弘扬传统文化，让传统艺术生生不息。 #TeochewOpera #sgtalent #ChineseOpera
