The Solus Project  (Teotl Studios  2016)

The Solus Project is a first person exploration and survival game, from indie developer Teotl Studios. It’s the spiritual successor to their previous game, The Ball. After your spaceship crash lands on a seemingly desolate planet, you start on an epic journey to locate certain pieces of the wreckage. Once they're combined, those pieces will hopefully allow you to put together some kind of communication device, enabling you to call out to your fleet for help. This is complicated though, by the harsh, unforgiving environment and unpredictable weather.

There are so many great things about this game. I really had a blast playing it. First and foremost, this game is all about exploring. Half of your time is spent on the surface of several open world type islands and the other half is spent deep underground, in small passages and massive caverns.

Scattered about the world are items that upgrade different attributes (like hunger, fall damage, movement speed, ect.) which encourage you to search out every corner of the game. As you're doing this, the survival aspect comes into play. You need to eat, drink, sleep and find ways of dealing with the extreme heat and cold. Luckily, if you just want to explore and not really worry about that stuff, there's a difficulty setting which enables you to essentially avoid all that. There's also some light crafting, which entails making things like a torches and hammers. You also get a device that has a disc that you can shoot out a little ways in front of you, and wherever that disc lands, you can teleport to it. It might sound simple, but that alone adds quite a lot of fun to running around and exploring.

The atmosphere is fantastic in the game. On the surface you'll find a full day and night cycle, with beautiful sunsets and cold, frozen nights. Then there's the awesome weather system. Sometimes it will be nice and clear out, other times you'll have fog or thunderstorms. And if you're particularly unlucky, you'll suddenly find massive cyclones coming straight at you or maybe a gorgeous (and deadly) meteor shower raining down on your head. Under the surface isn't much safer. As you explore spider web filled tunnels, lava pits and huge frozen caverns, you'll have to be careful to avoid all kinds of traps and even something sinister and dangerous that lurks in the shadows. However, there aren’t a bunch of conventional bad guys running around trying to kill you. Solus is all about exploring, not dodging lasers and shooting back at stuff. Really though, the things that make The Solus Project stand out the most are all the little details that the developers put in to help immerse you in the world. On cold nights, everything will be covered with frost. As you go up or down the massive ladders that are scattered across the island, the music naturally changes to an eerie, yet weirdly optimistic theme, that promises new secrets and interesting sights around the next corner. During one sunset on a beach, i was looking out into the water and suddenly a pod of dolphin like creatures swam by (during my playthrough i only saw this once). Another time i looked behind me as i was walking underground and saw footprints, which made me jump because i thought someone was following me (turned out they were mine lol), but then, as i spun around, i suddenly saw someone, or something, far up on a distant structure, which made me jump again. Or at least i think i saw something. In the blink of an eye it was gone. Maybe my character was just delusional from the lack of sleep and food. When i walked into the room in the last screenshot and started to walk by that frozen fish thing, its eye followed me wherever i went. It was so creepy. I loved it. I also can't tell you how exciting and stressful it is when suddenly the music changes, and one of those cyclone/meteor storms i mentioned earlier comes rolling in. One last thing i want to mention is the sense of scale you feel as you roam around. The rock formations all over the islands and the structures above and below ground are usually massive, which gives you a feeling of awe as you discover and explore them. Graphically it’s built with Unreal Engine 4 and can be very pretty at times. The lighting is great and the textures are nicely detailed (some are a bit stretched though, due to the size of the rocks) and sometimes reused a lot, but that's to be expected with such a small development team. The level design was always interesting and kept pushing me forward, excited to see what was coming up next. Lots of settings in the menus, which I'm a huge fan of, and the console is still enabled on the PC version (which I’m an even bigger fan of), which is great if you want to take screenshots or configure the game to your tastes. I have to mention the music and sound effects too. They were both so good and were integral pieces to the atmosphere and feel of the game. Totally a soundtrack worth owning.

If you're looking for a high quality, spacey/alien exploration type game to get lost in for a while, i can't recommend The Solus Project enough.
