Tequila Tasting in Mexico
The bf and I are not hard liquor drinkers but when in Mexico -- most particularly in Jalisco (Mexican state where tequila is produced) -- one must take a shot or two or three of tequila.
We visited Hacienda Dona Engracia in Puerto Vallarta (located in Jalisco) for tequila tasting. Dona Engracia is a working hacienda that has been producing tequila since the early 1900s. It was about 30 minutes away from the port in Puerto Vallarta where our cruise ship was docked.
We were given a brief tour of how tequila was made in the old days from baking the giant blue agave plant (they looked like giant acorns) and manually mashing them using a giant stone wheel to fermenting and distilling the juice.
After the tour was sampling tequila in the tasting room. We tried different grades from silver, anejo to premium tequila. We had about 6 shots including flavored ones -- coffee, almond and peach. (They told us that we could take more shots after the tasting if we wanted to but the bf and I were already very buzzed!) The hacienda staff who lead the tasting was entertaining and funny, not to mention that he took tequila shots with us as well! The bf got his cup topped off which I am very sure was due to the fact he is Mexican although this has been the poor guy’s first visit ever to the country of his ancestors.
The tequila was tasty that we ended up buying a dozen bottles for ourselves and given to our family as presents. After the tasting was a delicious Mexican meal in the courtyard which will be in my next post.
Some facts about Tequila: Tequila is a regionally specific name for a distilled beverage made from the blue agave plant, primarily in the area surrounding the city of Tequila,in the highlands of the central western Mexican state of Jalisco. Mexican laws state that tequila can only be produced in the state of Jalisco and limited municipalities in other states in Mexico.
Salud! (To your health!)
