A piece done for a fan-made set of Rage cards. I really liked that game...
day 20: rivals
ants (specifically matabele ants) and termites!! the termites are lunch for the colony. rip termites.
I loved watching large animals, and the birds were a revelation, but every single day I hoped to see dwarf mongoose, Africa's smallest carnivorous mammal. Dwarf mongooses live in groups and eat insects and other very small creatures. Full grown, their bodies are 6-9 inches long plus a longish tail, and they weigh 7-12 ounces.
They are quite common across East and central Africa, and I did see some, but generally they were at a distance, or running. So I was very happy when I headed back to my tent on the last full day of the trip to see a group of them in the rocks around the deck.
They stayed in sight for about an hour, and I was just surpassingly happy to watch them hunt for insects and peek over the edge of the deck. The world is an amazing place sometimes.

Some environment concepts to go along with those character designs!!
Whole left side is the blacksmith's forge (basing the furnace around a rhino beetle)
Top right three are concepts for the kingdom, perhaps hilly, perhaps cliffs, lots of glass and architecture resembling bug bits
Bottom right three are concepts for the bug creatures' nest. inspos from termite mounds and aluminum casts of ant hills
