#the terror #terrorclassics #sometimes i make stuff #art #congrats these are two of THE most upsetting paintings i've ever seen in my life!!!!!!!!!#what's upsetting abt the first one you may ask? open the full painting in a new tab. those ain't white rocks on the shore #anyway i feel like ep9 is generally the most upsetting episode overall and i also feel like that's an uncontroversial opinion #we know i've never seen all of ep6 in full bc it unrepressed some childhood trauma for me but watching ep9 feels like eating glass #i would RATHER eat glass than watch it #lads today we're thinking about hickey holding billy as he twists the knife in and how he didn't just bring him for food and how he didn't #*kidnap goodsir solely for his anatomy skills when they have to eat human flesh. he took goodsir to make billy better!! and it doesn't work #and the only thing he can do that will solve almost all of his problems atm is kill someone he loves lmao it sucks #hickey like. fondling the meat when he eats it isn't just him being weird and gay abt cannibalism it's him being weird and gay abt billy #you WILL cradle this man as you mercy kill him and you WILL hold his cannibalised flesh and remember when it was a body you loved!!#also i KNOW there are no cannibalism paintings here but also what do you think those skulls represent bruh.............#i did make a version with goya's cronus devouring his son but it was just kind of meh. i thought i could something better and more upsettin #and i did

#the terror #terrorclassics #sometimes i make stuff #art #on a visual level spirit bear is about gore getting eaten but it's also a depiction of shamanism so there's double the resonance #as you may be able to guess from the title the twombly piece is about the trojan war specifically abt the burning of troy #and yeah i guess i could have used it for a mercy but i don't think it looks much like fire it just looks like a magnificent bloodstain #which is appropriate for the first proper violent deaths we have in the series!#david young's death does suck but it's not another living thing doing harm towards him which gore and the shaman's deaths are #also in high school i did an abstract photography assignment based on the twombly painting which was fun. i made fake blood.#but i do h a t e abstract photography also it was based on that + centuries by fall out boy. important context for my life #this set is a bit more minimalist/abstract than the other covers will be so don't get used to it #my last fun fact is that spirit bear is at the AGO so i've seen it in person! fun and cool! if you like near toronto this could be you

#the terror #terrorclassics #sometimes i make stuff #art #i'm really excited about doing this!!! it's really fun and i had a really neat time making all the posters!!#yes i have all 10 episodes done--further fiddling with notwithstanding--gore will be up in a few days or maybe next week #this is the only time i'm going to use art explicitly depicting or referring to the expedition because otherwise that'd be too easy #yes that means no man proposes god deposes. i tried a few options and they were all ugly #i wanted to mix it up wrt the imagery but what else is there to latch onto imo???#this will be the only case of me cropping out a shipwreck (in the sea of ice) because it isn't thematically appropriate #also the sea of ice is also called the wreck of hope and i like that title a lot better but decided on the more well-known english name #stay tuned for.........more ice! religious imagery! #the terror #terrorclassics #sometimes i make stuff #art #lmao this one + terror camp clear + punished as a boy gave me the most grief #bc it's sort of trapped between the raw anxiety of a mercy and the absolute masterpiece that is terror camp clear so it's not my fave #anyway i had to pick dante & virgil for the hickey & irving imagery because of course but i still do not like that ship don't be fooled #[sees any ginger man in western art history] that's corn!#the repin painting is pretty self-explanatory #as usual i recommend looking at the full uncropped image to get more details and context #for example there's an inverted russian flag which i cropped out and the labourers (burlaks) are not all unform. they're a variety of *#exhausted working class men. and there's no glory in the work as it's miserable and grueling just like in the terror #repin helped cement the russian realist movement and this painting is a condemnation of hard labour for profit!#also shout out to courtois for having the most french name i've ever heard in my entire goddamn life #further shoutout to fairholme....you were a real one...moustache so dope u had to die

It's earned but it does take for granted that one has survived #around the edges of the mural are the names of every eminent arctic explorer you can think of #so this doesn't count as art depicting the expedition because it isn't just about them it's about the way we interact with history
