The creaking of Terror’s frame dominated the silence aboard, below deck was the worst when the crushing of the ice was most obvious, the agony of the copper and the wood trying to resist the pressure around her.
Below in the storage hold, none other than the Captain was looking over the conditions of his ship, eyeing each creaking source as if she might crack at any moment, holding a lantern up quietly and running his palm over the wood as if soothing it.

One last stop at a port and it would be on towards the sea ice and back into the Artic circle. Francis was probably one of the few that was not so much excited for the expedition but more that he would be back doing what he knew best.
He had not left Terror since she had docked the previous morning. Now with night falling, the captain was stood on deck, pipe in hand and looking out over the docks, half keeping an eye out for his crew or thieves but mainly just people watching. Particularly one that was getting a little too close to the ropes for hauling supplies into Terror.
“Unless you want to risk upsetting the Royal Navy,” the Irishman warned, “I would double check which rope it is you’re leaning on.”
