“Where we’re going, we don’t need eyes...to see.”

I’m thrilled to be back at Alamo Drafthouse April 18th hosting a Terror Tuesday screening of 1997 gore-saturated space horror Event Horizon. Preceding 1999′s one-two punch of House on Haunted Hill and The Haunting remakes, Event Horizon set the high watermark for taking genre classics and giving them the ol’ mall goth razzle-dazzle of scene-chomping lunacy.

Intended as homage to The Shining (and stealing a couple iconic scenes), the film (unintentionally) blends the communication breakdown and id-mining of Solaris with the gore and pain philosophy of Hellraiser, resulting in a surprisingly effective baroque tale (with glinting x-treme highlights). Everyone involved, from actors to set designers, gets an A+ for effort, though only Sam Neill seems to realize and fully exploit the camp potential at hand.

Tickets for Terror Tuesdays and Weird Wednesdays go fast (not surprising as they’re nearly always on film, introduced by true believers, and a damn bargain at only $10), so get ‘em while you can!
