How to tell the difference between ESFP and ENTJ?? They have the same functions, but the order is messing me up.. I tend to act like both???
both types, when mature, value being sensitive, independent, pragmatic, efficient. They are both outgoing, quick-minded, mostly chill, and enjoy the pleasant things of life, so sometimes it can become a problem to tell them apart.
But the main difference is Dominant vs Tertiary function.
Se dom: constantly aware of surroundings; observant; catches easily all physical changes; sensitive to sensory stimuli (like e.g. I’m the faster complaining when the lighting, sound, or smell does not fit with the environment, or just I can’t stand it); impatient. They live always “alert”. So easy for them to engage with what’s going on at the moment. Struggle to plan the future ahead or set a long-term plan.
Te dom: don’t struggle with planning. Indeed, they LIVE planning, and not setting an action path can become a problem for them. Te maximizes the solutions and ideas they come up with, without losing time, and valuing proficiency. They naturally synthesize every task, situation or problem they encounter to get to a conclusion or solution. Inductive thinking. Very structured mind.
E.g.: you walk down the street and suddenly you realize a concert or something like that is going on near you. You catch the sound and you recognize it/like it. If you’re a Se dom, even your mood would probably instantly change, if it was a bad mood, in order to match with what you’re feeling right now which is: music, movement. Don’t be surprised if you start dancing or cheering even before you get to the concert’ place. As a Te dom you will also like that sort of stimuli, and will probably engage later, but you will be more careful and measured processing that information. A Te dom would probably stop and wonder: what that is? where does it come from? why is it here I wasn’t aware of that? And a bunch of mental questions that the ESFP will never ask themselves or maybe much later. After getting into the vibe.
MORE: a Te dom would probably engage with the music it even if they like it or not, while a Se dom will be pretty pickier about that, and their bad mood can become worse if they find the music annoying.
Thus: sensorial stimuli affect to Se doms more quickly than to Te doms.
Se tertiary: Enjoying the finest, pleasant hobbies and likings, mostly. And sometimes it is also useful for enjoying the moment when they become confident in what they are doing aside of their projects, works, etc. “Every duty goes off, and I’m living my best life”. Usually, it is associated with lavish tastes, such as art, gastronomy, haute couture, photography etc. but it isn’t always that. They can just be very driven and touched by some sort of sensorial experiences and activities, but not engage with “whatever thing” comes at the moment. They have their “standards” and... “sensorial filters”, let’s call it like that. Not everything gets into the Tertiary Se basket.
Te tertiary: Although both like organisation, ESFPs need it more “visually” or, tangible, than ENTJs. ENTJ picture everything in their minds and that’s enough, while ESFPs usually need sensorial references to organise themselves. E.g. The long to-do lists an ESFP does physically (and aesthetically), the ENTJ has them already in mind; no need to write them down.
You can check the tags to see how tertiary Te looks like in an ESFP. This can be a good start: https://random-esfp.tumblr.com/post/190105775662/facing-intuitive-bias-and-mbti-stereotypes-esfp
I would say also that ESFPs, when healthy, guide themselves by their strong values and fight for what they believe for (Fi), while ENTJs are less likely to let themselves go by values, idealism, etc. They care mostly about goals and accomplishing things (Ni).
Hope it was useful and you can decide which type are you!
