139 - Falcon - Aoi Takahashi - Tesagure! Bukatsumono
Improvisational comedy is the future of anime. Hearing the voice actors coming up with bad puns and losing it for real is infectious joy.
when you make a good one
Tesagure's a pretty fascinating case study of developing chemistry. You can watch in almost real time the cast finding their rhythms, developing running gags, figuring out what sorts of scenarios work well and which don't, how best to bandwagon or play the straight man, and especially get comfortable enough to dunk on each other savagely. By season 3, the laughs are coming in good density. But equally interesting was the introduction in S3 of a pack of non-rookie VAs. They jump into the format very quickly, and their way of elaborating on scenarios is actually closer to Million Dollars But than the first two seasons of Tesagure, whose best moments tended to be more about character than content. It makes sense, as successful seiyuu generally have to be fairly witty by way of survivor bias, have already made the variety circuit somewhat, and so have already picked up on the conventional rhythms. And it doesn't seem like coincidence that all segments by S3 feel much more like corners you could see on regular idol show variety than before. It really is like seeing the differing and developing levels in Rooster Teeth employees as they go from staff to main players, figuring out how to tell podcast anecdotes well, how to speak on Let's Plays interestingly, and most relevantly here, what's actually funny improv on either On The Spot or Million Dollars But.
