State of the Dogverse
I haven't done one of these in a while, so I'm just going to say this covers the last six months. I can't be arsed to look up the actual dates.
THERE IS A PICTURE OF A DOG SPLEEN AFTER THE CUT. It's not super gross, but if you're squeamy about innards don't click the cut thingie.
Teshies right front leg is healed. She will be ten in September.
Spooky had a not-really-retained retained testicle. Meaning it had a short cord and sat just anterior to his pelvis, I could feel it and push it down into the scrotum, but it wouldn't stay. I had always intended to remove it if he was put under for another reason, but since I could feel and visualize it I wasn't too worried about it, and the opportunity never presented itself. He testicle did finally get enlarged, and we had it removed. Turned out to be a Sertoli cell tumor, a common tumor type for retained testicles. We left the other testicle alone. Radiographs did not show any visible metastasis. Spooky has developed a grade I heart murmur, and his heart was normal looking. MVD is pretty common in older Salukis, Spooky will be eleven in September.
Tiny has developed a subluxated lens in her right eye and has no or very little vision in that eye. It's not currently causing a problem, but if it does we'll remove the eye. Her mother, Poody, had subluxated lenses in both eyes. So far neither of Tinys two remaining siblings show any signs. Tiny will be twelve in September.
Gideons broken right front leg, the one that developed an infection, was still not healing (big ass callus that was not turning to bone,) and a persistent infection was suspected, so we had a biopsy done for a culture. He was given chloramphenicol, a older antibiotic that can cause some severe problems in humans. We were instructed to use gloves to administer it. Our vet scraped out all the infected callus on his leg, and filled the shallow space with a dental putty used to provide a scaffolding for new bone growth in dogs with severe deterioration of the jawbones (there was much consulting with the manufacturer about using the putty for his leg, it was very interesting.) The infection is now gone and his leg seems to be healing. Gideon will be nine in September.
Saddest Gideon ever does not like car rides or very dry weather.
It has been two years since we had a dermal hemangiosarcoma removed from Hubs sheath. No recurrence so far. Hub will be twelve in September.
(I don't know why so many of our dogs were born in September.)
Doobie had a bladder infection, with crystals (crystals were sent to the pathologist, they were just from the infection. Thank you, no special diets needed.) We had him neutered when we took him in for the infection. A month later he started having dark rusty port wine urine (this is really disturbing looking,) and acting generally uncomfortable and fussy, so back to the vet we went. There was a mass on the radiograph, so we had an ultrasound done, which showed a mass in his spleen. General statistics on splenic masses are about 2/3 are malignant, with 2/3 of those being hemangiosarcoma. This is a very common cancer in Salukis. We had the entire spleen removed (dogs usually do fine with no spleen, and since you have to open the dog up anyways there's no point in just doing a biopsy.) Our vet was instructed to euthanize Doobie on the table if there was any evidence of metastasis. HSA tends to kill quickly, and Doobie is a fearful dog, and he would not appreciate repeated trips into town for vet care if he was sick. The mass was sent to the pathologist, and it turned out to be a hematoma, basically a bleed/bruise, which is benign. Because the pathologist doesn't minutely inspect the entire mass, it's done on slices, there is a small chance that the hematoma was started by HSA. We considering Doobie cured until we see evidence to the contrary. He is eight years old. Spleen under the cut.

At the Eid prayers yesterday, Islamic Cleric Ibrahim Adjei taught people about the relationship between Jesus and Islam. He says Muslims believe Jesus was a prophet of God just like Prophet Mohammed, and he's teachings were the teachings of Islam. Ibrahim cited some quotations in the Bible to back his claims. I asked why he's teaching this now, and he said "I want people to see Islam and Christianity share similar messages, and so it is right for us to live at peace with one another. And also for people to seek Allah now." . 📷: Nana Osei - 2017 . . #nungua #teshie #Accra #Ghana #Africa #teaching #islam #muslim #eid #eidmubarak #prayers #cleric #jesus #mohammed #prophet #streetstyle #streetphotography #everydayafrica #accrawedey (at Teshie)
Isaq, a national 5000m athlete at the Eid Prayers at the Teshie-Nungua Estate Community Park. He was collecting money from people with the box. I asked if the mosques take offertory and he said "no, this is called Fiisibili Allah." He says the monies/donations collected are used to support Muslims who are in need, and also help other Islamic Associations. The "Fiibisili Allah" that were taken last two years were used in buying the canopies and mats that were used at this year's Eid prayers. . . NB: Isaq's brother spelt "Fiibisili Allah" for me, but I stand to be corrected on it. . . #teshie #nungua #Accra #Ghana #Africa #eid #eidmubarak #prayers #isaq #fiibisili #islam #muslim #ramadan #athlete #communitypark #streetstyle #streetphotography #everydayafrica #accrawedey #association #5000m (at Teshie)
