Testing Patience || Maddie & Constantin (Funus Rex)
[It was testing day again, and for once Maddie was glad to be there. Or maybe not glad. Apprehensive, nervous, keen on maybe getting some answers for once. Testing was usually a waste of time, but the image of Kaiser’s drooping face leering at her every time she turned her head made her far more willing to do whatever needed to be done, if it meant getting rid of him at the end of the day. Delusions, as far as Maddie could tell, were the most understudied of the Infections, which was understandable given that, compared to what they were up against, they didn’t seem real. They weren’t real, she reminded herself forcefully. Whatever else Kaiser was now, he wasn’t real. He was just in her head. And she wanted him out.
As anxious as she was about testing, Maddie actually showed up early. Too early. Usually when she came in-- as late as she could get away with-- she’d be met with a flurry of doctors and scientists giving her orders and asking her questions. Now there was nothing but the disinterested nod of a nurse preoccupied with something else. Maddie stopped in the middle of the room, unsure of what to do with herself. She was never very good at waiting, even for things she didn’t want. For lack of any other direction, she spotted a row of chairs along the walls-- waiting chairs, she assumed, for people waiting to be tested. That included her, now she supposed. And another early bird, someone she was more than happy to flop down next to and offer a cheeky, if tired and not terribley convincing, smile.] Alright then, Constantin? Got all your pencils sharpened, calculator, protractor, graphing paper with you? Heard the tests are going to be wicked hard today.
[She leans in closer, keeping an eye on the nurse to make sure they’re not overheard.] “Seriously, though, it’s been crazy, right? I honestly can’t believe they’re still making us do this after what happened last time.”
