I simply cannot see a title like "There's An Octopus In My Attic" and not wonder what in the world is going on in that WIP.

Yes, that actually isn’t fanfiction. It was a quick idea that I had at work while looking at job folders. The job in question had ductwork in the attic, similar to this (and picture below) and I thought that with the black wrapping and poor lighting in the attic, it could almost look like an octopus. 

So I jotted down a few notes, a basic story, and got that going. When I’m not quite so busy I might work more on it, finish breaking down the pages and notes for drawing, do the art, and maybe see what becomes of it.

B: Any of your stories inspired by personal experience?

The closest would be the Gasoline and Gunsmoke series, not that I’ve been getting into car chases, but um. Driving fast? I did lots of driving fast, with whatever internal combustion fueled thing I could get my hands on, when I was younger and stupider.

M: Got any premises on the back burner that you’d care to share?

cyberninja and pacrim, though everyone knows about those. I started a jesse pov b-side to There Are Dangerous Things, and there are two versions, and I hate both. I don’t know if I’ll abandon that, but I think the moment has kind of passed for that story. 

and like everyone else I have a canon verse getting together fic, except I’ll never finish that, just pick at it forever.

I stay thinking about that pretty deadly au I mentioned months and months ago, but it would be so looong and I’m a wuss.

but I gotta get my current project out the door first. >.>

N: Is there a fic you wish someone else would write (or finish) for you?

I saw you had posted about a Pretty Deadly AU, and I'd love to hear more about it because Pretty Deadly is excellent and I'd bet you'd be able to do some really great things with the concepts!

the teal deer is that in this AU,  Jesse is Ginny and Deadeye is him reaping souls in his capacity as a child of Death.

The long answer is that I’m fudging the details, per usual, and that there’s this whole thing I’m trying not to elaborate too heavily on, but anyway: Jesse’s mother is Death’s lover, but she’s more like a Persephone figure, not in the getting kidnapped way but in the way that she leaves Death to be reincarnated into the mortal world for periods of time because she doesn’t belong in the underworld, not really. And sometimes, Death goes to visit her anyway, and sometimes, there is a child.

All of Death’s other children accept their positions as reapers, but not Jesse. Jesse was angry when Death took his mother away, and rejected his position as a reaper and is living out his mortal life to avoid having to face his father and his duty for as long as possible.

Things proceed mostly as they do in canon–Jesse falls in with Deadlock, Jesse is picked up by Blackwatch, Jesse leaves just before the fall of Overwatch. Jesse has uncanny aim and can do things that don’t seem possible with a single action six shooter. If anyone suspects something is different about him, they can’t prove anything. (Genji, who’s made a pact with an ineffable, incomprehensible spirit beast, knows better than every scientist in Overwatch what must be different about Jesse, but he doesn’t care and no one ever asks him. Whatever his friend is, he’s his friend and he can have his secrets.)

Jesse finds himself uniquely suited to mercenary work, and that goes as well as could be expected, until the Recall and his old life comes knocking. And there are old faces and new faces–including one face he’d fully expected to personally kick into the river styx–Hanzo Shimada. But instead of seeking vengeance, Genji is looking for healing and reconcile, and, well, isn’t not really Jesse’s place to get in the middle of that, is it?

but anyway, it’s mostly a pretty deadly thing, but with a heaping dose of greek mythology and american folklore and a teensy dash of miriam black and abhorsen. Like, I had fun trying to make the shimada dragons sci-fi so now I’m trying to make Deadeye fantasy.

oh most definitely both. but it won’t ever seem ridiculous or ooc, i promise. i take building a consistent literary atmosphere very seriously and will do my best to upkeep the gritty realism meets bildungsroman afterschool special vibe i got going on.

but… i also want to have fun with this fic! its my first long, multi-chapter fic in like, a decade. i want to really push the story and my writing by using some tropes i love and love to laugh at, but do so subtly and with a lot of affection for fandom and the weird shit we consume.

i mean, the fic centers on one major trope that would end up on the aforementioned “bad”-tropes-im-including list: soulmarks. how ive incorporated them so far is a good indicator for how ill approach any and all tropes. because no matter what writing antics i pull, i will always bring it back to asking myself am i doing right by the world im building and the characters im developing. with this soulmark example specifically, like, they are these strange magical things to us but they would be pretty unremarkable to the people in the verse, because theyre used to it and its kinda boring to them tbh? and then you gotta add on character perspectives. so like, my wife @calciseptine is also writing a soulmark au and while she similarly takes on a quotidian approach to worldbuilding, yuuri cares A LOT about his mark, who his soulmate is, and (while not directly addressed) his own insecurity about being loved. but with hot oil spit and jesse? jesse’s mark takes a backseat to thinking about where he’s getting his next meal and (for the time being) his relationship with bad guy craig. he will think about it, for sure, but for him the biggest thing is just the inconvenience of the mark’s location and having to wear a glove all the time.

tl;dr: i promise i wont wreck my fic for the lols... but by god. if i can fit in fake dating somewhere IMMA DO IT.

Ahh, thank you so much!! I have been quite busy with good things (planning a wedding is a ton of work, no surprise there!) but I’ve started editing chapter 3 and hopefully will post it by the end of February!! So stay tuned and thank you for being patient with me!! <3 <3 <3
