Felice [Lizzi] Rix-Ueno: Design Fantasy Originating in Vienna
At the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto
My life with art in 2022 has started with this exhibition and it deserved the first one!
Felice [Lizzi] Rix-Ueno (1893 – 1967) was an Austrian designer active in Vienna and Kyoto. She worked on a wide variety of design projects including everyday items, and interior decoration like wallpaper and textiles. Also, she taught at some Japanese art schools such as today’s Kyoto City University of Arts.
Her works gave me a huge inspiration of fantasy which she emphasized on through her artist life. Although she worked under the pressure of the World War II, she utilized her creativity freely and uniquely and brought new inspiration into Japanese design industry. Also from the perspective of her contribution to art education in Japan and fostering young designer, she was one of the most commendable artist in the history of Japanese Modern Art.
