Scouring is the process of cleaning natural fibers before dyeing. This removes all grime, oils, and dirt as well as any grease that may inhibit the fiber from absorbing the natural dyes. This step is done before mordanting or naturally dyeing fiber, yarns, or fabrics.

There are so many different plants and sources for natural dyes. Each one has a specific time of year when it is at its peak, when it contains the post pigment potential. Harvest dyeing materials during their peak seasons to get the best results.
