I think it’s kind of ironic that Brian wants his music to mean something without it necessarily granting him fame or recognition, while a lot of fans navigate the relatable-ness of the music and the inevitable parasocial relationship between artists and fans. I feel like a lot of fans are attached to the idea of Brian AND the music he makes.
Like. Brian Sella is NOT my friend, but somehow I feel like everyone who listens to The Front Bottoms would get along with him at a party.
And he writes about being a loser as if he’s singing directly to people who never had the chance to fit it. Especially in the earlier albums, I really see TFB being a band for people who ARE navigating being a “loser”.
But because of that, it’s so easy to forget that I don’t know Brian. The music means everything to me, but I still don’t know who he is.
