What was the thought process for Kindness?
Well funny story, she started off in my head as a kinda lowkey punk skeleton girl. She was initially just a rotling. My main thought process was making a future friend/girlfriend for Mel. I also wanted someone that’s genuinely friendly/trusting. A fresh contrast to all the paranoia & wariness Mel’s had to get used to. I figure music would be a great way to. I was figuring ways they could meet/how she’d come in the general plot. Maybe was initially part of a potential rival gang of the smiling dead, a worker for Paradise Lost, connected to the Virtue etc.
Then I started thinking about Virtues & the future ones we haven’t seen yet. Then I wondered if there’s some that aren’t bad/scary like Diligence & Temp. Then U figure, what about a future friend/GF that is a virtue. And I figure what virtue would be most fitting?
🦋 Kindness🦋
There’s a good chance the actual Kindness Virtue will turn out to be fake/“nice” but I can imagine it’d be an even bigger subversion if Kindness is the real deal, legit moral person, atleast more so compared to the rest of the Virtues(be funny to see everyone assume the worst from Kindness & perplexed they’re actually chill). I imagine there’s got to be atleast one sorta token good teammate/someone that could end up becoming an ally to the Smiling Dead(if Temperance doesn’t manage to come back & resolve their drama with Ken)
I def wanted their color motif to be like Blue or another bright color, to contrast with the darker atmosphere of the Gaslight District or the clinical feel of Paradise Lost. At first I was thinking blue fire, but then when I thought of her being a virtue, I realized blue could relate with the sky/religious symbolism. Sky blue. Then thinking about animal motifs(Mud beign snake, Ken aquatic/fish, Bread snapping alligator, Mel bird), what about butterflies 🦋 gentle animal in contrast to the rest that are more associated as potentially dangerous. Not to mention butterflies, like the blue morpho are associated with stuff like transformation, change, hope etc which I think will be a huge part of Mel’s journey.
And voila, I ended up with Kindness. And when thinking about what role they serve, I changed the rock music to more POP/Kpop as I feel like rock/punk would be considered more rebellious/anarchy to heavens standards. I was def thinking of Hatsune Miku(like that butterfly headphone meme) lowkey during all this as well as Chang’e from Over the Moon.
I had a lot of fun thinking on this. I’m really excited to see how the rest of the virtues will turn out in the actual series. I Might make more in the future.
