Chris is miserable, and they have no guarantee they can ever free him from Maggie. I am genuinely of the mind that Donut would have let Chris be killed if Carl had allowed anyone else to do it. Their safety is at risk with Maggie out there; her safety is at risk. But screw all the consequences. As long as she has the power, she won't let Carl live with having killed another crawler, one that was his friend.

UGH! Love Katya stepping up to say he doesn't have a skull. Offering to do this thing that I also don't think she felt too great about doing herself. And Donut would have still let her do it.

love Love LOVE that Carl is so angry about Donut whisking Chris/Maggie away but mostly because he's so incredibly relieved about not having to do what he had decided on doing. UGH IT'S DELICIOUS!!

I do think Donut very much believed that Carl would forgive her, but I absolutely think she is going to and was worried about the chance that he wouldn't. That she would have to live with his ire and disappointment and anger. But she did it anyway.

I don't know how much I think she'll fret about it, but she also has to live with knowing she's prolonged Chris's suffering. I don't think she's actually too caught up in the moment about how to save him. Her focus is on saving Carl. And I LOVE that!

The Gate of the Feral Gods - mid-chapter 13

The farther I get in and the series has it's stride, the less I have to stop and say about anything. I'm enjoying this one so far. I'm glad we've reached the point where we don't have to sort out what is going to happen with Katya. She's just a part of the group, and I like that. I like her.

I'm glad that the dungeon didn't do anything to restrict the crawlers' ability to chat with each other, though obviously separating them into different sections does absolutely keep them from being able to work together as a group. I'm actually enjoying the prospect of watching Carl have to whip some crawlers up into shape. lol But also with all these changelings around, I'm also just waiting for Maggie to show up again.

I've just reached the AI throwing a hissy fit over not getting its fetishizing out of Carl and forcing his hand foot. Carl's mantra of 'they will not break me' is still great and I don't think he's betraying that by surviving this indignity, and I think it's all the more striking the ways he has to navigate where the line is. What constitutes as breaking him versus survival.

Not stepping on the gerbils saved some dignity for him, but it didn't just put him at risk. It put Donut and Katya and the city in danger, and that's the problem with power imbalances. One can keep saying until their face is blue the things they won't do or put up with, but it's rarely only ever oneself that is affected.

I did just get to the line where someone said something like, 'this isn't funny anymore' and Carl replies that it never was and like yeah. Just because something sounds or looks funny doesn't mean it's not harmful.

The Gate of the Feral Gods - Just finished Chapt 18

Carl just exploded the toy Donut at their manager (listening to the audiobook; i don't know how to spell names), and I am fascinated! It somehow feels different from the other acts of violence we've seen from him. They had more of a direct necessity. This is proactive. He adds the note to the cookbook that he's doing this for his people, but he made the plan before he knew Loita(or however that's spelled) was a complete zenophobe who will steer her people to eradicating humans. He did it for the kid of course, and also for Mongo who she threatened. If the show had been live, I would have thought he wanted the place to get attacked again to scare Loita into quitting.

I'm not like, appalled, just surprised and really curious what his personal train of thought to come to this act is. Especially when get the direct parallel of acting versus not acting with Chris/Maggie previously. He was willing to, but he was SO relieved when he didn't have to. Obviously this isn't one-to-one, but it highlights how he's not actually a fan of violence. It's not how he WANTS to solve his problems.

Oooh wait. Hmm. I wonder if he's hoping for a frame-up. I've been wondering a bit about the consequences of his actions, but he played it off to Loita that it was the toy's fault entirely. Which is a bad look for a company even if that company is pro-enslavement. FASCINATING. Let's see if he's played his cards smoothly enough that that's the narrative.
