Hot Air // Lawrence & Edward

There was something about light wind that always made Edward smile when it would blow by him. It was as if the world was trying to tell the air to slow down, to just take some time to go at its own pace, but the air wanted to careen as fast as it could by people, to cool them down and ruffle them up. Air was stubborn like that, and benevolent in the strangest kind of way, like the anti-heroes that Edward loved to read about with their tough skin and gentle, golden hearts. At least, that was how Edward always pictured the air, as something that was practically as tangible and real as a human. Then again, the humans he compared it to were fiction.

The best part about light wind was that it gave Edward an extra excuse to skip coming his hair that morning so he had a few more minutes to revise for his Ancient Runes NEWTS. As he sat on the edge of the Astronomy tower with his Ancient Runes book propped up on his lap, the wind was brushing past, tossing up his hair slightly, like a child tugging on their friend's shirt to try to get them to play. He stretched out and flipped the page with a flick of his finger, glancing over the edge of the tower to look down below him at the ground that seemed so far away.

Heights had never bothered the boy. The idea of drowning or suffocating or being trapped in a small place made his heart speed up to dangerous levels, but sitting on the edge of the astronomy tower caused him no panic. He was high up, he was in the air, he was peaceful. His mother would likely have a heart attack if she saw him, and Johanna might even be scared, but his dad would understand.

Hearing a few shouts from below as bodies began to move toward the doors, Edward realized that it was nearly lunch time. He snapped his book shut and stuffed it into his bag, hopping off the ledge. Looking down as he walked, he did not even realize there was someone else in the doorway until he crashed right into them and tripped on his untied shoelace.
