In preparation for next week's show at Off Square Books, we talked to one of the performers, Libby Rae. Come out and see her play Thursday, November 6th at Off Square Books starting at 6pm!
TMR: Who is your biggest musical influence?
LR: Tough question...I have many! Almost every bit of music I hear can influence me one way or another. I listen to many kinds of music but Country Blues is closest to me... so, people like Son House, Robert Johnson, Furry Lewis (to name a very few) and especially Sam Chatmon are musicians who greatly influenced me.
TMR: As a musician, what is it that you want your audience to take away from your performance?
LR: I want them to, hopefully, enjoy what they hear and encourage them to listen to and find out more about the older generation of blues singers and players. There are many, many different styles of 'blues' to pick from. I like the old acoustic blues.
TMR: What makes your music unique?
LR: I'm not sure that it is unique! They say there is nothing new under the sun....If I had to guess, I'd say it's the Sam Chatmon style of picking that I do. Others do that too though!
TMR: How often does Mississippi translate into your music, and how so?
LR: Born and raised here...how could it not translate somehow..How? I'm not sure, except it's what I am... A Mississippi girl.
TMR: What inspires you?
LR: Many things....nature, textures, sounds, water, a good back roads trip, great photos and music...I'm easily inspired by simple things.
