Oh how we love pillow cushion covers!

Last Wednesday, on a hot and humid afternoon in Chiang Mai, Thailand amid the New Year’s festivities (which by the way include drenching anyone in your sight with cold water), we sat down with Tamarind Bay for some coffee and to discuss a favorite topics of ours, pillow cushion covers. Tamarind Bay has been one of these peculiar workshops that has been operating in Chiang Mai for many years, and over time has developed intricate knowledge in various artistic design forms; one such being the art of tapestry. And so, we thought who better to chat about pillow cushion covers then Tamarind Bay. This is what we learned and hope that you will find these tips useful as well!

First up, the Stitching. For cushion covers, one of the finest forms of stitching is done using an Overstock method. Overstock stitching is a higher grade of sewing technique that involves cutting the edges off the excess cloth, wrapping it, and then stitching the cloth in a weave pattern. This complex technique eliminates fraying on the edges and makes the seams several times sturdier. A quick sign of lower quality stitching is, if when you pull at the cushion cover from both sides along its seams and start to see small gaps opening up. You can comfortably conclude that the cover is made with a traditional lower quality stitching method. If you have kids, pets, or otherwise frequently entertain guests, then a lower quality stitching is also a sure sign that your covers won’t last long.

The material. Tapestry fabric is rich, tightly knit, fairly thick and luxurious material that happens to be the best for cushion covers. You want your pillow to be comfortable to lie on and perfect to display as well, tapestry serves well for both purposes. As a practical matter, you also want a material that can take some wear and tear – and minor stains. This is why Tamarind Bay does not recommend plain colors or thin cushion covers.

Pattern. Leave the couch a comfortable soothing color, such as beige or light olive. But experiment a little with the throws and pillows. Make sure to choose a pattern and material that complements the couch and your general décor. This is important because throws and pillow cushions are easy to replace and can be changed with seasons and for special occasions, such as the holidays or a birthday. By mixing and matching throw pillows, you can greatly enhance the look and feel of your living room with minimal effort and price. In general, you can never go wrong with geometric shapes or stripes. These add color and dynamism, break up stains well, and are timeless. Whimsical motifs are also always in vogue: e.g. animals, floral, or paisley designs are great.

Placement of pillows. Knowing how to place pillow cushion covers is important according to Tamarind Bay. They recommend, 3, 4, or 5 pillows per couch (however, one per armchair is sufficient). There should be at least one cushion per seat. Odd numbers often look better, unless arranged side by side – in which case even numbers tend to look better. That being said, the first rule is that in general, place the larger pillows on the outside, near the arm rests. Place additional pillows in front and towards the center. If you have an odd number of pillows, the odd one out usually occupies the center. The second rule to this, is that the outer (larger) pillow, should be a color closer to the look and feel of the couch. The smaller “throw” pillows on the inside are the ones that generally stand out more. These are also the ones that will most likely get picked up and moved when you have guests over, or when you simply want to make some room to lie down and watch your favorite show.
