pairing playlist ask
i was tagged by @ferusaurelius! tysm for the tag <3
i’m doing the one pairing that has consumed 70% of my blog: shamara. yes, i actually went to the extent of making a playlist for them because my brainrot is THAT strong. you can listen to the whole thing on spotify, but here are my favorite tracks from it.

Losing My Religion - REM: LOOK. I think is is the perfect Shamara song for a lot of reasons. I could write a whole paper about how this is their theme song but to make this short: I love the whole religious symbolism that can be related to Samara’s fervent devotion to her code, and how she gradually cames to question it through ME2, ME3, and her relationship with Shepard and how it’s reflected through the lyrics, with both that devotion and the insecurity she shows. And these verses, man. These verses:
That's me in the corner That's me in the spot-light Losing my religion Trying to keep up with you And I don't know if I can do it Oh no I've said too much I haven't said enough
Or:
Consider this Consider this, the hint of the century Consider this the slip That brought me to my knees, failed What if all these fantasies come Flailing around Now I've said too much
I know REM didn’t have videogame characters in mind when writing this, but it just. Fits. Them. SO. WELL.
Nobody - Mitski: I had to put this in here just because of this one verse:
And I don't want your pity I just want somebody near me Guess I'm a coward I just want to feel alright
And I know no one will save me I just need someone to kiss Give me one good honest kiss And I'll be alright
If this doesn’t scream broken old warrior I don’t know what does. nobody nobody nobody nobody nobody UUUUUUUUUUUUU
Far Side Of The Moon - Tinashe: This song is 1) a banger 2) a very accurate reflection of their canon relationship:
And maybe just maybe I was mistaken Maybe we could be perfect Maybe I was forsaken Maybe it's really worth it
Someone Like You - Adele: Unfortunately I need to put an angsty song in this playlist because in canon it’s just like That. I like to think the lyrics relate to Samara’s POV after Shep gets with someone else and she just regrets not taking a risk. Ideal if I ever want to write a fanfic like that. Now, if you excuse me, I’m gonna go buy a pint of Ben and Jerry’s and cry.
What You Know - Two Door Cinema Club: Yes, dramatic change in tone and also POV. I think this is what Shepard thinks of Samara:
And I can tell just what you want You don't want to be alone You don't want to be alone And I can't say it's what you know But you've known it the whole time Yeah, you've known it the whole time
It’s a reflection of Samara’s desires and insecurities, and how she holds back. But also, some verses relate to the image I have of Shepard (Maybe next year I'll have no time / To think about the questions to address / Am I the one to try to stop the fire?)
