Let Her Understand
Song Prompt: “Hearing” by Sleeping at Last
Oh wow, I thought this would sit in my drafts, never to touch the light of day, just like the rest of my Writing Club prompt responses (or any of my writing tbh lol).
She’s just sitting there.
I don’t know how to get through to her. I just keep repeating myself and she just stares. I don’t think it’s hit her yet and everything is moving in supersonic lethargy - everything is too loud yet unsteadily silent.
Over and over again, I try and get her to at least get up, maybe take my hand, and finally walk with me. She hasn’t been able to do that in awhile; I don’t think she has been able to do anything in awhile.
Everyone has left the room by now. I’ve told her about what is happening outside, what will happen next, what she can do now, but she is just so tired. I understand, well, I understand as well as I can given the circumstances. I tell her things she needs to know and what I know she wants to know yet doesn’t realize she does yet. I just talk and hope what I say will stick. I’m never sure if I get through with what I say or if people just come to their own conclusions and humour me. I try to say what I think she will need to hear, but I’m not her, I don’t have the same experiences, I don’t know the same people, but I like to think my words are comforting.
I’ve been through this before, been by their sides for as long as they need me. It takes time. It takes just the right words. It takes and takes and I don’t know yet if it ever is going to give back anything, but it helps to do as much as I can to aid the process.
I still have a couple more things to say now, then I need to go. I know it’s painful, I’ve been through it time and time again and it’s never going to get any easier. Please just listen to me, just this once. If she doesn’t want to talk, just give me a sign that I’ve gotten through to her and I’ll step back, I’ll listen. I don’t judge, that’s not my job. I just need to talk or listen or do as much as I can for as many as I can, whatever is necessary at the moment. And at this moment, I need her to listen to me, to take my hand and take her last first step.
It’s been about an hour and I have to leave, so I try to get her to listen to me, listen to her family, listen to herself. Everything next is completely foreign and the unknown is terrifying, but I hope she can understand now that she is not alone and I will damn well make sure she does not walk in fear. I’ll give her a couple more minutes. She’s lived a good life and I will make sure she does well in the next.
