“Politics at its worst is ugly, but politics at its best is magnificent. Because it's not just about policy. It is soulcraft and it is moral.” Today, a groundbreaking candidate ended a historic run for the betterment of our nation. I have my own suspicions about the politics surrounding Pete’s sudden decision, but I will focus here on what is most important. Pete Buttigieg made me believe in our highest values again, and he showed millions that no matter who you love, you do belong, you do matter, and you are not less-than. In short, Pete lived up to politics at its best. He was magnificent because he so often brought out the best in his supporters, and every day he reminded me gently but powerfully that there is hope for this nation and for LGBTQ people. I truly believe this is just the beginning of the Pete Buttigieg story and just the beginning of a new era of belonging for our nation. I am proud to have cast my vote for the first major openly gay candidate for president; I can’t think of a better use of my voice this primary. In the grand scheme of history, 2020 will eventually be just another page in the past, but the barriers Mayor Pete helped break this past year will last for generations to come. #thankyoupete
