YES I also picked up the parallel with the atomic bomb (there's literally a mushroom cloud when Orannis is freed and I'm pretty sure Nix didn't use that iconic imagery unintentionally) and I also definitely felt some of the sentiment you get in those accounts from scientists who worked on the Manhattan Project and later regretted what they'd done, in Nick's later chapters when he's desperately trying to shut everything down.

I AM NOT ALONE! Also I 100% agree about the mushroom cloud. That was the thing that kind of confirmed my thoughts, because c’mon. A scientist works on something that could potentially lead to the end of the world, and when it goes boom there’s a mushroom cloud. Good point too about his regret once he realises that this is maybe not a fantastic knowledge quest.
