Hello new people! I’m Jay Justice, Jamaican-American, queer disabled Black woman from the Bronx, NY.
I’m a writer, cosplayer, advocate, and actress. My work has been featured on SYFY, i09, CollegeHumor, Tested.com, IGN, TimeOut New York, Tor.com, BBC America and on the shelves in your neighborhood comic book store among other places.
I’ve also done promotional and marketing work for Marvel, Activision and several comic conventions. I am one of the co-creators for the Doctor Who/Torchwood web series Legacy. I’m a guest at over 20 conventions a year & always looking to do more. I take part in fandom based discussion panels and workshops all over the US. I love science fiction, fantasy, comic books and video games. Contributing to works that I’ve been a fan of since I was a child is the coolest part of what I do.
I’m a disabled spoonie with a debilitating autoimmune disease. It affects my entire body and limits my mobility and productivity, but never my creativity. I was diagnosed as a child and so have been ill for most of my life, going from a cane, to a manual wheelchair and currently using an electric mobility scooter. Being disabled and chronically ill in the United States is an expensive & frustrating experience, but I try to show other people struggling through the same things that poverty and disability don’t have to define you as a person.
I am the cosplayer who likes to leave positive words in places where people are being negative. I don’t argue with trolls, just provide truth and reinforce the fact that cosplay and fandom is for everyone regardless of body type, disability, race, religion, gender identity or sexuality. I started ‘Plant a Flower’ and I hope it empowers those who have been bullied into thinking that they don’t belong.
I believe that diversity in the media we consume is important, necessary and ultimately beneficial for everyone. In the ideal fantasy fiction, everyone has a place, and it doesn’t have to be as the stereotypical villain, the token or the gross caricature. We all deserve the opportunity to create and enjoy media where we can see ourselves as the hero, no matter what we look like or how we identify. I’m proud to be a part of that, and I’m excited about what the future will bring.
