1. if someone wanted to really understand you, what would they read, watch, and listen to?
If someone wanted to understand me right now, they wouldn't be watching much. They'd be listening to a lot of Regina Spektor and Broadway musicals, and they'd be reading... I don't know. This is one of the saddest things for me to admit, but I haven't really read that many good books lately. I'm not sure if fanfiction ruined me or I just got fed up with all the stereotypical young adult literature, but nothing I've read in the past few months or so has really struck a chord with me. They'd probably have to read the books below, I guess.
5. do you think of yourself as a human being or a human doing? do you identify yourself by the things you do?
When I put it this way, it makes me sound kind of passive, but I consider myself more of a human being than a human doing. I identify myself more by the things that I am, rather than the things I do, but I've found that most of the time, these are tied pretty closely together anyway.
15. five most influential books over your lifetime.
This is really tough, but:
A Swiftly Tilting Planet, by Madeleine L'Engle; I got it as my birthday present when I turned six. Over the ensuing twelve years, I've reread it countless times. It's not the most famous book by L'Engle, but it's my personal favorite. Time travel! Changing the future! Averting nuclear war! Unicorns!! What more could you ask for, really
Kira-Kira, by Cynthia Kadohata, absolutely and completely ruined me, but it still ends up being pretty inspiring. I really liked it.
The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, is mostly influential to me because of the differences between the first and second times I read it. The first time I read it, I was nine, and I'm not really sure why it was in my classroom. I didn't even realize (spoilers!) Gatsby died. The second time around, I was eighteen, and everything made a lot more sense to me. I guess rereading it showed me how much I've grown up.
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. Everything was handled really well and all the loose ends were wrapped up, and it had an interesting and unique point of view; how many books do you read that are written by Death itself? (Also if you didn't cry in the aftermath of the bombing, I don't know if you're completely human, tbh)
I couldn't let this list go by without mentioning the Harry Potter series. I love all of them, but Prisoner of Azkaban will always have a special place in my heart. Maybe it's because it's the last happy one before everything goes to shit.
