What is Sonic and Metal's relationship like? Amy and Metal talked about how Sonic wasn't very happy with the two of them hanging out.

The plan is a kind of begrudging respect, love-hate kind of thing between the two of them. Sonic is actually pretty forgiving, though not as much as Amy, and is naturally more suspicious of “fakers”. Metal, meanwhile, still doesn’t know what to think of his inferior beyond a very vague sense of envy.

The real thing I hope to flesh out is that Metal, being a kind of corrupted reflection of Sonic, has a lot of Sonic’s flaws and more extreme traits cranked up to 11, i.e. over confidence, impatience, being a bit brash, even a little aloof at times, etc. With that said, Sonic really doesn’t like being reminded of the things he actively tries to keep under control, while Metal doesn’t like what is essentially himself, but respected, accepted, and less unstable, though not necessarily “better”, either.

In a weird way, Sonic does in fact find some aspects of Metal admirable, like his honest effort to at least try understanding others and better himself. The thing about Sonic is that he does suffer slightly from a fear of failure as his one of his biggest weaknesses, with his desire for justice and helping others being the main thing that lets him overcome that. That, and of course, a cool attitude to keep those fears under wraps.

But Metal? Metal doesn’t care about justice. He’s only beginning to even understand the greater good. Hence, his desires to improve and rise above are purely self-motivated, in spite of failures. He experienced real failure multiple times, while Sonic is pretty much riding on a long winning streak. And then that makes him realize the biggest difference between the two of them: Metal doesn’t fear failure, he fears doing nothing about it. Deep down, Sonic both respects and envies that aspect of Metal. Whenever Sonic would beat Metal in a race, he felt less relief each time, because Metal would always have been a little bit faster, a little bit more determined, and a little bit smarter. He dreads to think of what would become of him if he ever lost to Metal.

Metal, meanwhile, is somewhat baffled by Sonic’s selflessness along with the lengths he goes to do what’s right. It’s the one part of his programming that is either suppressed or wholly absent, and he was unsure for the longest time if that’s what he truly needed to become the official “better Sonic”. He doesn’t even understand his own respect for Sonic’s heroism.

What this all means is that beyond Sonic pretending to just be forgiving and Metal pretending to be “over” his worse feelings towards Sonic, they both want to understand what makes the other so special because they see something missing in themselves. It doesn’t help that they, naturally, have very similar interests, and will probably wind up being able to connect through those.

TL;DR: there is a very strange mutual respect going on between them. Gradually, an actual friendship will grow from it.
