A tough year, but this beautiful moment with my wife and my grandson in his brand new Mario pajamas on Christmas Eve brings a smile to my face. She’ll be working the overnight shift nursing in the ICU this New Year’s Eve saving people’s loved ones. She really is my hero.

This represents not one, but two of my favorite moments of 2017: I bought a [really][good] tripod and took it out for use. I’m still learning how to use it of course, but one new thing it has allowed me to do is long exposure sunset, evening, and night photography. The second favorite thing is that I can now go back out in the areas near my house that were ravaged by fires and hike and take photographs again. Since I took this, there have been many other large fires in southern California, with much damage done, and plenty of carbon being tossed into the air. So this favorite moment photograph has become bittersweet since I took it.

THAT ONE MOMENT.  I had a lot of skyline photos, or street shots of NYC to choose from, but as I was looking through them, I knew I had to chose this photo. I picked this simple selfie as my “moment” for 2017 because it marked a HUGE milestone for me. Celebrating 20 years of sobriety!!!! (& this is a $3 Hanes t-shirt that is as old as my sobriety!) I think it’s time to make a new one.  :)

Brown pelican and snowy egret, Virginia Living Museum

One of the keepers was tossing fish to the pelican, who is surprisingly bad at catching, and also disinclined to go fishing for the ones it doesn’t get.  It was surprisingly hard to capture the big guy with his mouth open.  According to the keeper, the egret and other waterbirds lurk nearby to go after the ones the pelican misses.
