Reasonable Doubt: Why Mayte Garcia May Be Older Than We Think

Today, an article was posted on soulhead.com that embeds a video of an 8 year old Mayte Garcia performing on That’s Incredible with a date listed as “circa 1981.” Although she said in her book her mother did tell people she was older in order for her to perform at certain venues and take classes reserved for older dancers, being 8 years old when she made that appearance is one of the few things Mayte has been consistent about over the years, the fact that she made an appearance on that show as the “youngest professional belly dancer” is one fact she doesn’t falter on nor does she alter.  As of this writing, it is still reported as such on her personal website and on video in her introduction for Hollywood Exes.  She also reiterates as much in her book.

This is where the rubber meets the road and we have some questions.  Mayte has given a birth date of November 12, 1973. According to the aforementioned article, she was 8 in 1981. Looking at IMDB for That’s Incredible, her performance on that show would have aired between May and August, if the year 1981 is correct.  That means that Mayte would have turned 9 in November of 1981 if she was 8 when the show aired, thus making her birth year 1972 as opposed to 1973.  But that isn’t the big reveal.

If Mayte was 8 in 1981 when the show aired and turned 9 on November 12 of that same year, then in the summer 1990 when she supposedly met Prince, Mayte would have been a 17 year old high school grad going on 18 and not a 16 high school student.  This also means that when she moved to Minnesota and began working with him, she was of legal age and did not need a guardian as she claims in her book.  Further, every interaction between them she describes occurred when she was of age and considered a legal adult.

As a result of the claims regarding Mayte’s age in her memoir and over the years, reaction from fans and non-fans alike has been varied.  However, there remains a very negative undercurrent where people have likened Prince’s relationship to that of R. Kelly and Aaliyah, and Elvis Presley and Priscilla. However, this new article changes all of that and we have to start looking more critically at all the claims made in her memoir.

Fudging one’s age is not unheard of in the entertainment business where youth holds more weight, sometimes, than experience. Michael Jackson was 12 in 1970 when the Jackson 5 had their first hit, but Motown executives billed him as 10 saying that he was “cuter” at 10 than 12. The same was true with Shirley Temple and Judy Garland.  Even Prince was promoted as a 19 dynamo when he was really 21.  He then went on to bill his own protege Susan Moonsie of Vanity 6 as a 16 year old “Lolita” for “shock value.  The theme of Prince’s O(+> album centered around this relationship between him and a fictional Princess of Cairo who was purportedly 16 years old.  Perhaps in living out the theme of the album, the lines between reality and fantasy were blurred and are now the stuff that Prince legend, and unfortunately scandal, are made of.
