An old favorite 😊 an undergrad professor of mine had inherited tons of these from his office predecessor and was going to throw many of them out. I rifled through to see if there was a July 1969 copy…and I got it. There’s something about seeing what was happening in other fields of science when big things were happening in others.

Salvaging History

Yesterday was absolutely overwhelming.  As many as you know, I am a full-time volunteer but I tell people I get paid with experience and opportunities beyond my wildest dreams, which is payment enough for me (not for my landlord though!)  Part of the reason I'm here 8 or 9 hours a day is because our curator Dave also curates the campus herbarium and is only in the Zoological Museum during the afternoons, but for the UMZM to function as a facility on campus it really requires that someone be here all day.  Yesterday on top of doing loans, impromptu tours, training volunteers, and accommodating students from our Vertebrate Osteology class, I also salvaged these journals and catalogs that were largely getting tossed from an office down the hall to free up some shelf space. 

Why don't we have a designated building or room for these kind of things?!  Goodness knows we don't have the space for them in the Zoological Museum, but how could I let these things be tossed in the trash?!  All I can say is is genuinely Thank God that I was at least around to prevent that kind of thing from happening.  

You can clearly see in these photographs that these are original journals from The Auk, National Geographic, The Oologist, and The Museum from around the turn of the century.  Now they have a safe and secure place on the shelves of The UMZM!
