i'd like to thank everyone for the lovely response i've gotten for my bacchae comic and to answer a few questions i've received about it. i have a feeling it's a case of having got outside of its target audience (me, my partner and a couple of friends).
why would it be a hate crime? what's the joke about it being a hate crime?
well. it's tongue in cheek and you definitely need to a) have read the bacchae and b) understand transmisogyny in order to get it. in the bacchae, pentheus (who is represented in the comic by a severed head and an arm) decides to 'infiltrate' the bacchants (who are all women) by dressing as a woman. the women aren't best pleased when they learn about this, corner him, and rip his limbs off.
the joke is that pentheus is a transfeminine character (to me) in that he's the representation of the fears of a transmisogynistic society. the story is basically about women killing a 'man' they think is a predator and trying to 'infiltrate their spaces'. stares off into the distance......okay you can fill in the rest
is the woman on the right a maenad? or dionysus?
she was just meant to be a maenad. however you can make her dionysus if you want. give dionysus tiddies. unfortunately, considering that the whole Pentheus Getting Mobbed By Cis Women In Womens Only Space was his idea, i don't think he'd care about whether agave had committed a hate crime.
speaking of, the women on the left who is rending and tearing and eating pentheus is agave, his mother. surprisingly, this is not the worst mother/son relationship there is in greek mythology.
it is possible that this has raised more questions than it's answered. in which case. i'm so sorry. just read the play
if I see one more person calling Dionysus a ‘fun party god’, I’m going to clobber them with my four different translations of the Bacchae and then force them to listen as I explain in depth how sinister, cruel and manipulative he actually was
Did that boy deserve to die for his crime?
Whatever, it's none of my business, stay positive, will you?
Execution Clap, the song referenced here, always reminded me of the Bacchae. It's actually about online harassment campaigns but the lyrics reminded me of how Dionysus mocks and humiliates Pentheus in front of everyone and then encourages the maenads to hunt and kill him.
pentheus as a child
men will say theyre going for 'boys night' and then they go and have gay sex. please. think of my grandma. they left her behind.
The chorus when the messenger tells them what happened to Pentheus on Mount Cithaeron:
