"Mom I frew up."
so with the three little baitlings do you think Ezran will keep them all or will the rest of the Dragang get one each or summet?
what do you think?
I think they will possibly stay with Elmer (kids will presumably regroup with Sea Legs - which, Ezran letting the crab go and stay depending on what it wants) but it would be adorable if Ezran brought them back and had a little castle pond. I do imagine early on Opeli put in a limit of just how many strays Ezran could bring home / the castle could have, so if it's pushing that limit... I dunno, somewhere they get to be safe happy glow toads and not fish food, for sure!
Animal therapy
The next morning after they'd returned from the Sea of The Castout to the Sunfire camp was oddly quiet. From Callum's stories, Soren had expected to see a place buzzing with life where humans and elves worked together to rebuild the city that had been lost to the deadly plague. Right now, however, there were very few elves wandering between the tents and on the grassy plains around them. Even though Soren didn't understand why, he could feel the tension in the air around him. But right now, he had a more important matter to attend.
The first thing he'd planned to do after coming here was check on Corvus, his best friend, who had been injured in the fight with the corrupted banthers. Soren knew that he would be alright, after all, before joining the crownguard he'd been a soldier of the elite Standing Battalion. Corvus had surely risked his life more times than Soren could think of but it didn't change the fact that he was worried about his friend.
For the past week, Soren had spent every waking moment thinking of Corvus, save for the moments when he had had to come up with a master plan to deceive a bunch of pirates. Or when he'd been busy trying to survive when those pirates held them captive. But otherwise, Corvus had been on his mind constantly.
He knew that Amaya would make sure Corvus received the best kind of treatment and got plenty of rest. He also knew that his friend would be good again in no time. But unlike anyone else around them, Soren had known that there were some wounds Corvus carried on the inside, the kind of wounds that took longer to heal than a scratch or a broken bone. He also knew that Corvus wasn't the type to talk, that he always acted strange and defensive when Soren suggested some "big feelings time" between them because even though Corvus was a great and attentive listener, he had a hard time opening up about his own big feelings. In time Soren had learned not to nag or pry on him, he appreciated anything Corvus had been willing to share at a given moment.
Sometimes they wouldn't talk at all for a few hours and Soren would just bring him a pastry smuggled from the royal bakery during his little escapades with the King. Corvus would always roll his eyes at him, mumbling something about how ridiculous it was for him to disobey the rules that he was supposed to respect and execute as the head crownguard before ultimately eating the pastry he'd brought.
There had been times when Soren had caught Corvus playing with Barius' stray cats in the courtyard. The animals always seemed to cheer him up when he was feeling down. Similarly, he would sometimes let Bait crawl on his lap where he slept during dull council meetings while also reducing Corvus' tension.
Soren had been told that despite his best efforts to hide it, Corvus had been brooding most of his time in the camp and not really speaking to anyone except Gren, Amaya or Queen Janai. Thankfully, Soren the Mastermind had a solution for that or even three solutions.
"Good morning to my favorite crownguard!" Soren said in a singsong voice as he walked into Corvus' tent right when the other man was sitting on his bed and finishing his breakfast.
"Soren!" Corvus exclaimed and dropped his spoon the moment he saw his blonde friend coming in, grabbed his crutches and was about to get up before Soren gestured at him to stop with one hand. Right then, Corvus noticed that his other hand was occupied with three tiny creatures he hadn't seen before. "What are those?" Corvus asked, raising a questioning eyebrow at Soren who gave him a big smile and sat on the bed right next to the other man.
"Corvus, meet the baitlings!" Soren announced and lifted the three creatures in his hands so Corvus could see them better. Each of them resembled a tadpole in a different shape and color and they were all watching Corvus with their big round eyes.
"The baitlings?" Corvus repeated, unsure if he'd heard it right. Had Bait found a mate during those few days when they hadn't seen each other?
"They're wee glowtoads, dummy!" Soren chuckled. "We rescued them from a big scary pirate who wanted to use them as bait for sea leviathan!" He explained while Corvus listened and nodded, even though he didn't really understand much of his words.
"So now you have a traveling zoo?" Corvus teased, picturing the wee glowtoads along Bait, Rayla's critter and Zym.
"Haha, funny," Soren rolled his eyes and playfully elbowed his friend, who hissed at the slight pain it brought him. "They're our new crewmates" He announced and cleared his throat before altering his voice to sound more formal.
"Corvus, meet Jellybug," Soren said and gently placed the orange tadpole in Corvus' lap. "Sneezles," He went on, lifting the green creature who let out a tiny sneeze the moment Soren put it next to Jellybug. Corvus watched them wiggle and blink at him curiously and he couldn't deny that they were adorable. "And last but not least, Hat," He said and placed the blue tadpole on top of Corvus' head where it nestled comfortably in his dreadlocks.
"Did you really call a glowtoad 'Hat'?" Corvus deadpanned, his eyes darting up to see the creature itself looking at him from above.
"Yes, it's a very distinguished name. Am I right, Hat?" Soren said and the tadpole squeaked in response. Corvus couldn't help laughing at the scene as it was clear that Hat enjoyed their name very much.
They spent the next few minutes playing with the baitlings together and watching them wander up Corvus' chest. Only Hat decided not to leave the comfort of the soft dreadlocks where they decided to take a nap while his siblings received scratches and tickles from both Corvus and Soren. In the corner of his eye, Soren could see how his friend's features became less tense than before. Now, Corvus was smiling brightly at the wee tadpoles who didn't seem eager to leave him anytime soon. That sight made Soren feel something warm and funny in his chest, something he couldn't put a name on just yet, but seeing Corvus happy made him happy too. It was all that mattered.
