This unusual mixture of gin, sherry and Cynar was first sold at the short-lived Manhattan bar The Beagle.
1 ¼ ounces Fino Sherry
1 ¼ ounces Cynar
¾ ounce Beefeater Gin
Combine ingredients in rocks glass over one large piece of ice.
Stir until chilled, about 30 seconds.
Express an orange twist over the drink and drop into the glass.

165 years ago, Charles Darwin published "On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection" on November 24, 1859. Over the following years, his theory of evolutionary adaptation became a central unifying concept of life sciences.
This April 18, 1874 article from our Harper's Weekly collection relays Darwin's early career when in 1831 the recent Cambridge graduate set sail on a survey expedition aboard the Beagle with Captain Fitzroy; the observations made during this voyage informed his subsequent writings and work.
On this day in 1858, Charles Darwin co-published the first outline of a theory of evolution along with Alfred Russel Wallace, who hard shared his own independent work on the subject. It was met with little enthusiasm. Darwin developed the theory further and the following year published “On the Origin of Species”.
