I rarely comment, especially on LinkedIn. There is little wealth in it. Either sound advice goes overlooked, or doesn’t serve the ‘performative reaction’ post that is more of a detriment to modern trade writers than an algorithm ever could be. Our strength remains within our authenticity. Otherwise, the adage ‘You get what you pay for’ remains our bane rather than a blessing. 

In the south, our word is more than a bond. Those can be manipulated and broken with mitigated fallout. No, our word is an investment. So if our word is true, weathering all seasons, it reaps dividends as a bountiful harvest after planting the seeds and tilling the field daily. 

I would suggest that one would be hard-pressed to perform while pulling weeds, but ingenuity is the mother of all invention. I just wish that, regarding staged players fretting and strutting until they are heard from no more, said mother would keep her damn legs closed.

18 And Counting doesn’t need another sequel. But ‘TLC’ could benefit from some character-driven stories. The point is this: either we change the zeitgeist, or be consumed by it. There is no in between. The artists and artisans who endure are the ones who invest in themselves. 

So, regarding the ‘I lost clients to AI’ performative posts, take stock of your skills. And reinvest accordingly. This is the modern-day crucible, but not the crucifix. So instead of writers becoming messianic characters within their autobiographical narrative, adapt! This is Digital Age Darwinism serving itself. From primordial ooze to better prose…

Understand that I, too, have lost clients to the unholy algorithm, yet the cost analysis suggests a net gain rather than loss. Point of fact, those businesses had you clocked on an egg timer before you realized it. And the salary amounted to little more than 30 pieces of silver of betrayal.

So look elsewhere for those that praise the human influence: craft, consideration, comprehension, commitment, culture, and care that we provide. Otherwise, it is a bullish economy of time, energy, emotions, and effort squandered in this investment. 

We get more through referrals and recognition than by a Dickensian word count or hourly commission. So if we are to be reduced to medieval patronage, the investment lies elsewhere. Let them eat cake! Specifically, separate the wheat from the chaff with price floors and strategic outcomes.

By cultivating partnerships rather than patrons, referrals and recognition become your greatest assets. Not a market shift liability. That cake will wind up giving them the ‘wholly shits.’ So serve yourself by serving clients who choose principle, perspective, pith, and presence, rather than posture and performance.
