I just loved this book series on audible. I read a shit ton of female detective novels and series. It’s my favorite thing. Unfortunately, they’re pretty much all the same, only set apart by the personality of the detective and their supporting cast of characters, which is why I rarely talk about them or recommend them.
This however has a female detective protag with a backstory that is unlike anything I’ve read so far. She was kidnapped and held captive for 3 years, during a blackout she ceases the opportunity to free herself. But her captivity is not used to shock. They don’t keep revisiting it as a trauma to upset readers. It’s just something that needs to be evaluated as it is relevant to her current mental state and her perspective. She’s not angry or reckless. It’s really quite refreshing. Instead of using such a traumatizing experience as a catalyst of unrelenting drama and bad behavior, the writer just shows Jude become very shut off, and lost in herself, but more compassionate than most, more aware of everyone’s emotions and extremely private. Her recovery -such as it is- is for the most part exemplified in the progression of her relationship with her partner, Uriah. But don’t worry, this is not a romantic relationship. In fact, the author does not throw her deeply traumatized, ptsd stricken, female protagonist into a romantic relationship at any point during these three books.
Jude’s personality reminds me a lot of Olivia’s from Fringe. I only recently realized that toward the end of the last book. I feel so empty now that I’m done lol. The journey this woman goes on is very unexpected. Book 3 in particular is a wild fucking ride with quite a few shocking twists and reveals that are unexpected (for the most part) but also make complete sense and are executed very well. Book 3 came out this year, hopefully it’s not over.
